Alexander Skarsgård Stars In New Comedic Sci-Fi Series That Debuts May 16

Apr 9, 2025

Apple TV+ first made waves with their large-scale sci-fi series, “Foundation,” then wowed folks with “Severence” and the MonsterVerse spinoff series “Monarchy: Legacy of Monsters” (that featured scenes with Godzilla). They’re dipping their toes back in the sci-fi genre with “Murderbot,” a new comedic show led by Emmy-winning Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård.
The studio has sent us a new trailer for “Murderbot” to share with you, which is heading to the streaming service on May 16 exclusively on Apple TV+.

Based on Martha Wells‘ best-selling, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series “The Murderbot Diaries,” the Paramount Television Studios series adaptation hails from The Weitz Brothers (“About A Boy”), who both wrote and directed “Murderbot.”
An official synopsis for the upcoming Apple sci-fi streaming series:
A sci-fi thriller/comedy about a self-hacking security construct who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients. Played by Skarsgård, Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.
Joining Skarsgård on the call sheet are Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, and Tamara Podemski.
Wells’ string of “Murderbot Diaries” novels features seven books published from 2017-2023, giving showrunners plenty of source material for follow-up seasons if audiences and Apple are into the idea of continuing the new show.
After appearing on high-profile HBO shows such as “Big Little Lies” and “Succession,” seeing Skarsgård getting his own series is certainly an exciting prospect here.
