‘Werewolf by Night’ Gets MCU Sequel Update From Michael Giacchino
Apr 10, 2025
Werewolf by Night is quite possibly the most unique MCU project fans have had the pleasure of receiving in Marvel’s modern flop phase. The black-and-white Disney+ Halloween special was a breath of fresh air for MCU and comic fans alike, as it captured a completely different vibe from any other adjacent project in its more serious tone and stunning yet muted visuals. For horror fans, the special was an unprecedented field day of monster hunters, monster memorabilia, and, of course, monsters, which included an appearance by the iconic Man-Thing. Fans might’ve thought the knockout Jack Russell showcase was a one-and-done deal, but director Michael Giacchino recently revealed that there is a future for Werewolf by Night, if Disney allows.
It’s no surprise that the stylized special was a hit since Giacchino, experienced composer of several beloved Disney projects, including Up, The Incredibles, and the upcoming MCU film The Fantastic Four: First Steps, lent his talents to the story. Now that Giacchino is moving into the comic world to continue werewolf Russell’s story with a new line, ‘Werewolf by Night: Blood Moon Rise, ‘ where a 1970s Russell will face off against Dracula, the hit special has come back into conversation. While his comics are not tied to his Disney+ project, he told EW that he’d love to expand on the live-action side of Werewolf by Night.
“I think I would like to do something with the story that we created for television, but that’s got its own thing going and it doesn’t quite slot into what’s happening currently in Jack’s life in the Marvel [comics] world. So there’s a little bit of navigating there. … I would love to do another Werewolf by Night [special] more than anything. I think we’re just waiting for the industry to settle into its new norm, whatever that is at this point, before we figure out what to do there.”

Michael Giacchino Is Not Waiting on Disney
Disney+
Michael Giacchino likes to stay busy. When he’s not composing iconic scores, the writer is working on his Werewolf by Night comic line and reviving an old horror classic. The director is in the middle of planning his feature film directorial debut: an unlikely remake of Them!. The 1954 black-and-white sci-fi movie follows gargantuan man-eating ants and the terror they cause. Seems right up Giacchino’s alley, right? While he has proclaimed his passion for monster media, the creative doesn’t want to be a one-trick pony in his directing.
“I never want to feel like I’m the kind of creative person that is doing the one thing over and over again. I’m always looking for something else that is fun to do.”
With his diverse background of composing also including Ratatouille, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Giacchino won’t have to do much to prove that he’s as versatile a filmmaker can be. A follow-up to Werewolf by Night might take longer than expected, given the trajectory of the MCU at the moment. But it just might be on the horizon after Disney figures out their upcoming strategy, which hopefully will involve more killer specials.
