Ryan Coogler Says “Really F***ing Scary” New Series Is “Immediately Next,” Has Had Conversations With Gillian Anderson
Apr 21, 2025
Director Ryan Coogler (“Black Panther”) is having a great weekend as his original film “Sinners” has earned an estimated $61 million at the global box office (toppling “A Minecraft Movie” domestically) and is already talking up his next project, a new iteration of the beloved sci-fi series “The X-Files” (spawned two feature films).
“I’ve been excited about that for a long time and I’m fired up to get back to it,” Coogler said during an interview with “Last Podcast on the Left” (via Variety), confirming that that project is “immediately next” on deck for him. “Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f***ing scary.”

That’s not it from Coogler’s update as he’s been having conversations with original actress Gillian Anderson (who played FBI Agent Dana Scully), alluding to potentially trying to get her involved in some capacity or, at the very least, getting some insight from her.
“She’s incredible and fingers crossed there,” Coogler told the podcast, explaining that Anderson was finishing up work on Disney‘s “TRON: Ares” the last time the two talked. “We’re going to try to make something really great, bro, and make something for the real ‘X-Files’ fans and maybe find some new ones.”
“The X-Files” followed FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who investigated various strange and supernatural happenings across America that mixed all sorts of genre elements, including aliens, monsters, deadly viruses, and government conspiracies. Although it’s unclear if Coogler is also interested in bringing back or speaking with David Duchovny as well.
Former showrunner and series creator Chris Carter had revealed back in 2023 that Coolger was looking to pursue a “diverse cast” in his new version of “The X-Files.”
