Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends finds itself in the exact same position that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning did a couple of years ago, when it was released in the wake of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. The action movie simply could never recover. Karate Kid: Legends is attempting to pull off a Herculean task this weekend, as it debuts after a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend. It’s expected to take the third spot on the domestic box office charts, behind last week’s two holdover hits, but despite the competition, it’s coming in with a higher haul than it was projected to. Karate Kid: Legends, which serves as something of a soft-reboot/legacy-quel, grossed less than $8 million on opening day, which sets it up for a debut weekend haul of a little over $20 million. By comparison, 2010’s The Karate Kid reboot grossed over $50 million in its first weekend, and concluded its run with over $350 million worldwide. The new movie unites characters from the reboot, the TV spin-off Cobra Kai, and the original films. It opened to mediocre reviews — it holds a “rotten” 57% Rotten Tomatoes score, but it was embraced by audiences who awarded it an 88% Rotten Tomatoes rating and an A- CinemaScore. Retaining its number one spot, Disney’s Lilo & Stitch generated around $17 million on its second Friday, as it aims for around $60 million in its sophomore frame. This should take the live-action remake’s running domestic haul past the $275 million mark by Sunday; a remarkable achievement, considering it’s been only a week since its debut. Lilo & Stitch is poised to pass the $500 million mark worldwide this weekend, as it charges towards the coveted $1 billion milestone. The movie earned a record-breaking $146 million domestically in its first weekend of release.
‘Bring Her Back’ Opened to Excellent Reviews

In second place, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is looking at a second weekend haul of over $25 million, after generating $7.5 million on its second Friday. By Sunday, the film’s running domestic haul should be able to pass the $120 million mark, while its global haul will pass the $300 million milestone shortly. It still has a lot of work to do before it recovers its reported budget of $400 million. But the movie is headed in the right direction, despite less-than-glowing reviews and a mixed audience response. Debuting in the fourth spot, A24’s Bring Her Back grossed just over $3 million. The horror film is expected to gross around $7 million this weekend, thanks to incredibly positive reviews. Directed by the Australian twins Danny and Michael Philippou, Bring Her Back is their sophomore feature, following the very successful film Talk to Me. The fifth spot was claimed by Final Destination Bloodlines, which has now passed the $100 million mark domestically. The movie is eying around $10 million this weekend, after grossing just under $3 million on its third Friday. Bloodlines is expected to nudge past Bring Her Back in the weekend rankings, while Wes Anderson is expected to challenge his own limited release record with his latest film, The Phoenician Scheme.
