‘Bring Her Back’ Aims for Cult Hit Status With Solid Box Office Debut
Jun 2, 2025
After the grand success of Talk to Me a couple of years ago, the Australian twins Danny and Michael Philippou are back with their sophomore feature, Bring Her Back. The movie debuted this weekend to positive reviews and solid audience reception, and found a spot on the top five list at the domestic box office. Although it couldn’t match Talk to Me in terms of revenue, Bring Her Back performed better than recent A24 releases such as Death of a Unicorn and The Legend of Ochi. It earned $7 million domestically this weekend and another $1 million from overseas territories, for a global debut of $8 million. Bring Her Back comes on the heels of hit horror movies such as Sinners and Final Destination Bloodlines, not to mention Neon’s The Monkey, which grossed over $60 million worldwide earlier this year. The Philippou brothers’ Talk to Me remains one of A24’s biggest hits ever, having out-grossed films such as Midsommar, The Witch, Hereditary and others, with a final global box office haul of over $90 million. It cost under $5 million to produce. Bring Her Back’s Rotten Tomatoes score is lower than that of Talk to Me; it’s currently “certified fresh” at 90%, with its audience score on the aggregator website sitting at 79%. In his review, Collider’s Ross Bonaime described the movie as a “legitimately spine-chilling” meditation on trauma. Bring Her Back marks something of a return to form for A24, which has had a tough run this year. The indie outfit experienced success in 2024 with movies such as Heretic, Civil War, The Brutalist, and We Live in Time. It would hope to keep the streak going with the high-profile upcoming films Materialists, Eddington, The Smashing Machine, and Marty Supreme.
The Philippou Brothers Have Set Themselves Up for Success
Bring Her Back’s acclaim establishes the Philippou brothers as exciting voices in the horror genre. The relatively young filmmakers broke out on YouTube, suggesting that the next generation of auteurs will emerge out of social media platforms. They’re perhaps the biggest success stories to have graduated from the video-sharing platform since David F. Sandberg around a decade ago; his latest movie, Until Dawn, made over $50 million at the global box office. You can watch Bring Her Back in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
