‘Mortal Kombat II’ Star Reacts to Fans’ Worries About Major Changes From the Game
Jul 22, 2025
Mortal Kombat 2 is one of the most anticipated movies of the 2025 calendar as audiences get a sequel to the 2021 reboot, Mortal Kombat. One of the criticisms leveled against the 2021 film was the absence of the titular Mortal Kombat tournament. However, the sequel, which premieres on October 24, will be handling that problem efficiently. As teased in the recently released trailer for the film, the stage is set for a showdown between Earthrealm and Outworld, as their best fighters face off. Joining the ranks of Earthrealm fighters will be Hollywood star-turned-hero Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban. Cage was one of the glaring omissions from the 2021 reboot, and now, audiences get to see the Jean-Claude Van Damme-inspired hero taking on the fiercest of foes. Looking ahead to his character’s introduction, Urban reveals that his character will be a little different from what audiences are used to seeing. Speaking in an interview with IGN, the actor revealed that audiences will meet his version of the Mortal Kombat fighter, Johnny Cage, at a low point in his career. Cage will be missing much of the brashness and “spark” that die-hard fans of the franchise are accustomed to.
“When we first discover Johnny, he is sort of lacking a lot of that quintessential spark that I think fans of the game will know. We start him at a very low point. His career is completely in the dumps. He has no self-confidence. He has neglected his martial arts training. And at his lowest point, he gets called up to, essentially, be a warrior that represents the Earthrealm and fight for the very future of humanity. And as I read the script, I found it just such a compelling, interesting, dynamic journey. We start this character in one place, and as an audience, we get to see him evolve and grow.”
Returning to direct the sequel will be Simon McQuoid, who returns after working on the 2021 film. McQuoid will direct from a script penned by Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater, even as Ed Boon, series co-creato,r remains a major part of the creative process. While Mortal Kombat 2 will welcome a number of new additions for Earthrealm, it’ll also introduce several heavy hitters for Outworld as well as they seek to earn the win that’ll allow them take complete control. These villains include Outworld’s ruler Shao Khan (Martyn Ford) and the powerful necromancer and sorcerer Quan Chi (Damon Herriman).
Will Fans Meet A Lore-Accurate Johnny Cage in ‘Mortal Kombat 2’?
To resonate with its die-hard fanbase, Mortal Kombat 2 will have to maintain and establish strong links to the lore. The rivalry between Sub-Zero and Scorpion, played by Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada is an essential part of the lore according to Boon, and it’ll be evident in the coming sequel. So, will fans get to experience a lore-accurate Johnny Cage with the trademark swagger and brashness? Urban reveals that they will, as his character will regain his confidence and cockiness, as well as his signature video game moves, as the sequel progresses:
“A wonderful facet of the writing is they really humanize the character of Johnny and he’s not some [two-dimensional] character, not that he ever was, but he has room to grow. And he certainly does that as he gains his confidence and gains his belief in his self, [and] some of that sort of cockiness and swagger starts to come through. Fans of Johnny Cage are going to be super delighted by the signature moves and all the nods and elements that we’ve worked so hard to infuse into the movie.”
Mortal Kombat II kicks off the tournament on October 24. Check out the new trailer in the player above.
