‘Countdown’ Creator Reveals Hopes of Future Seasons on Amazon Prime Video
Aug 1, 2025
With each new action thriller series, Amazon is no doubt chasing that Reacher dragon. While the latest attempt did not quite reach the same heights as the adventures of Alan Ritchson’s nomadic avenger (and even proved to be deeply divisive among critics and audiences), Prime Video’s newest action hero has a bright future ahead of him, according to the show’s creator.

Sometimes the best place to watch an action movie is right at home.
Derek Haas, the creator and writer behind this year’s Countdown, has declared his hopes and excitement over the future of the action series, which finds Supernatural and The Boys star Jensen Ackles leading the way as a maverick undercover LAPD officer who finds himself at the center of a dark conspiracy. And the clock is ticking.
“I’m feeling good. I haven’t done streaming before, so kind of all of the analytics are new. It’s different from when I was doing network and you knew the next morning, like, oh, this is doing great, whatever. But I’m excited because it feels like we continue to pick up viewers every week and so that gets me all excited.”
Derek Haas Reveals How Many ‘Countdown’ Seasons He Wants…and It’s Potentially a Lot
Amazon Studios
While it has not yet been confirmed whether Countdown will return for Season 2, the series has been another big action success for Prime Video. Despite a divisive response (38% from critics alongside 73% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes), the series quickly shot up the charts to the #1 spot and has held firm in the Top 10 ever since. Asked how many seasons he envisions for Countdown, Haas revealed that, so long as people keep watching, he’ll keep finding dangerous scenarios and throwing Ackles’ Detective Mark Meachum into them.
“I said this before with ‘Chicago Fire’ way back when. I was like, as long as people keep showing up, we’ll keep making it. Now did I think that would go for 14 years? I had no idea. So I will say the same thing about this: As long as people keep watching and digging it, then we will keep making it.”
Created by Derek Haas (FBI: International, Chicago P.D.), Countdown stars Jensen Ackles alongside Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy, Bad Boys: Ride or Die), Jessica Camacho (Watchmen), Violett Beane (Death and Other Details), Elliot Knight (The Boys), and Uli Latukefu (Young Rock). You can check out the synopsis for Countdown below.
“When an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight, LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Ackles), is recruited to a secret task force, alongside undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement, to investigate. But the hunt for the killer soon uncovers a plot far more sinister than anyone could have imagined, kicking off a race against time to save a city of millions.”
Despite the divisive response, the series has impressed some, with CBR’s Joshua M. Patton calling it “fresh, surprising storytelling,” while JoBlo’s Alex Maidy calls it “fun, fast, and largely familiar, but with just the right tweaks to keep you watching from episode to episode.” However, others couldn’t have been more dissatisfied, with Fandomwire’s Callie Hanna calling the show “agonizingly dull.” Source: TV Insider, CBR, JoBlo, Fandomwire
