Matthew McConaughey Reunites With ‘True Detective’ Creator for New Netflix Series

Aug 27, 2025

Netflix has emerged as the winner in a competitive bidding war for an upcoming series starring Matthew McConaughey. The yet-to-be-named project will reunite the Academy Award-winning actor with True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, with Yellowstone fan-favorite Cole Hauser also set to star. The project also marks a reunion for him and McConaughey, who first shared the screen in the cult classic Dazed and Confused. The upcoming series, details of which were revealed via The Hollywood Reporter, is currently under development at the streaming giant, and will feature McConaughey and Hauser portraying brothers. While specific plot details are being kept under wraps, the series is produced by Skydance Sports, which hints at a sports-related element within the project’s storyline. Deals for McConaughey and Hauser are being finalized. The McConaughey and Pizzolatto reunion is particularly noteworthy. Their work on True Detective’s debut season won over audiences and critics alike. McConaughey led the first season of True Detective as Detective Rust Cohle and Woody Harrelson starred as his partner, Marty Hart. The season’s talented cast also included Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Tory Kittles. True Detective’s first season garnered critical acclaim, earning 12 Emmy nominations and five wins, including Outstanding Directing for Cary Joji Fukunaga. Both McConaughey and Harrelson received Emmy nods for their leading roles, with McConaughey ultimately winning the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal.

Hauser previously collaborated with McConaughey in Dazed and Confused, and McConaughey made a brief cameo appearance in Hauser’s 2004 film Paparazzi. Hauser is best recognized for his starring role as Rip Wheeler in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone and will reprise the fan-favorite role for the upcoming The Dutton Ranch, co-starring Kelly Reilly. Speaking of Sheridan’s vast Paramount+ universe, McConaughey was reportedly previously in talks to star in a Yellowstone spin-off, but he is no longer attached to that project. Plot details surrounding the upcoming series are scarce, but the trio of Pizzolatto, McConaughey and Hauser should excite television fans. McConaughey is an award-winning actor who secured an Oscar for his role as Ron Woodroof in the 2013 film, Dallas Buyers Club. Throughout the early 2000s, McConaughey was best known for his work on romantic comedies (like The Wedding Planner and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), but then began stepping into more dramatic and career-defining roles in films like Killer Joe and Mud. Pizzolatto is a respected writer who began his work on episodic projects with 2011’s The Killing (where he scribed the first two episodes); in film, he’s written screenplays for The Magnificent Seven (2016) and The Guilty (2021). While Hauser’s work spans genres (with projects like School Ties, Good Will Hunting, and 2 Fast 2 Furious in his portfolio), he is best known for his portrayal of Rip in Yellowstone. Audiences are particularly drawn to Hauser’s Rip, a brooding and intensely loyal cowboy. Beyond the upcoming Netflix series, McConaughey and Pizzolatto are also attached to a film adaptation of the Mike Hammer book series, with Pizzolatto penning the screenplay. McConaughey is also set to reunite with his True Detective co-star Woody Harrelson in the upcoming Apple TV+ comedy series, Brothers, highlighting McConaughey’s return to the small screen in diverse projects.
