‘Doctor Who’s Disney Renewal Rejection Reportedly Stemmed from Being “Too Woke for Trump’s USA”

Nov 4, 2025

Doctor Who may not have been dealt a killer blow from “wokeness” that it cannot regenerate from, but it certainly seems to be what ended the collaboration between the BBC and Disney, according to a new report. How? Because the whole idea of a Black, queer lead, with several other diverse characters and storylines, was too much for “Trump’s USA.” Doctor Who has been dabbling with diversity for decades. For those who have been sticking with the sci-fi series since at least its reboot in 2005, there was a kiss between The Doctor and Jack Harkness that echoed through time and space, numerous hints at The Doctor being bisexual, and then things became even more diverse with a female lead in Jodie Whittaker, several minority companions, transgender characters, and stories that took aim at some current social issues to boot. This has caused plenty of online outrage, as is expected, but according to Deadline, this could have also directly led to Disney deciding not to continue its financial arrangement with the BBC to co-fund the series beyond their initial contract, which will end with the upcoming spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea. According to what the report calls a “well-placed industry source,” the show “wasn’t doing what it needed to do [on Disney+] to be sustained.” The report noted specifically that Doctor Who had become “too woke for Trump’s USA [which was] a factor in Disney minds” and impacted the chances of a contract renewal. Showrunner Russell T. Davies has previously addressed the idea that Doctor Who has “become woke” as a ridiculous notion, both because he sees anything described as “woke” as just “an open door,” and because “Doctor Who has always been about diversity.” While there have been several countering arguments, from Disney sources claiming that Ncuti Gatwa was just not up to the task of following the likes of David Tennant in the role of The Doctor, to some sources linked to the BBC claiming that the problem lay in Disney’s ineffective marketing of the show. All in all, the sum of the issues is the same – no more Disney cash propping up the show’s budget.
What Is the Future of ‘Doctor Who’?

Billie Piper in Doctor WhoBBC/Disney+

Despite the collapse of Disney’s deal with the BBC, Doctor Who is not done yet. The series has been around for over 60 years, and despite having an extended hiatus in the middle of that time, Russell T. Davies will be bringing the series back for a festive special in December 2026. What the long-term future of the show holds beyond that, as well as whether we get answers to questions like how that Billie Piper twist will play out and whether another new Doctor could be leading the next full season, are up in the air right now. With no new Doctor Who episodes airing for more than a year, it seems that fans will have plenty of time to speculate before The Doctor comes back to screens for Christmas 2026.
