Netflix Renews ‘Last Samurai Standing’ for Season 2
Dec 21, 2025
Netflix has now confirmed the fate of its latest action series hit, Last Samurai Standing. So, has the streamer cut the martial arts epic off at the ankles? Or will the show get the chance to return for another round? Well, amid what seems to be constant news of unceremonious cancellations on the popular streaming platform, Last Samurai Standing has battled its way to victory as Netflix has now greenlit the show for a second season. No doubt picking up on the threads left behind by the first outing, Last Samurai Standing Season 2 is now happening, with lead actor, producer, and fight choreographer Junichi Okada saying in a statement (via Netflix Tudum) that he’s “excited to get back into this wild world.”
“I’m pleased to see that ‘Last Samurai Standing’ has reached global audiences and has been confirmed for a second season. I’m excited to get back into this wild world and once again charge into battle with the production team. We hope to make the next season even more energetic and action-packed.”
Director Fujii Michihito, meanwhile, teased that Last Samurai Standing will be “even bigger and better” than the already hugely epic, 100% rated first season. Somehow.
“I’m very pleased and relieved that ‘Last Samurai Standing’ has been such a big hit outside Japan. I’m also honored to say that the series has officially been greenlit for a second season. There’s no doubt that Season 2 will be even bigger and better than the first.”
‘Last Samurai Standing’ Season 1 Achieved a Perfect Score on Rotten Tomatoes
Netflix
Based on the manga series of the same name, Last Samurai Standing is led by Junichi Okada (From Up on Poppy Hill, Tales from Earthsea) as our samurai hero, who, for the sake of his family, is forced to enter a deadly battle royale-style contest in which it’s “one point per life” with the winner claiming a huge cash prize.
The series has been another huge global hit for Netflix, taking the top spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English Series) chart, ranking in the Top 10 in 88 countries, and becoming one of Japan’s most popular streaming releases ever. The series was also met with critical acclaim, landing a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus reading, “Stunning visuals and adrenaline-rich action allows this character-driven period piece to slice through noise and shine as the Last Samurai Standing.” Last Samurai Standing Season 1 is streaming on Netflix now, and you can check out the official synopsis below…
“The curtain rises on an epic battle royale between brave warriors who lived through an uncertain era. In the late 19th century during the Meiji period, 292 warriors, including Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), gather at Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto at nightfall, lured by the promise of a huge cash prize. Each given a wooden tag, they join a vicious game in which they must steal the tags of their fellow participants and reach Tokyo to win the prize money. Under the veil of night, the temple grounds are filled with unease and the presence of bloodthirsty warriors. When the signal is given to begin the game, the combatants launch into their relentless battle for survival.”
