Abbott Elementary Takes Program Of The Year At The 2022 TCA Awards

Due to a short-sighted concern over COVID numbers in Los Angeles, the 2022 TCA Awards did not happen in person, as originally planned. Instead, the winners were announced, once again, vritually. The good news is that ABC’s freshman breakout “Abbott Elementary” dominated the proceedings.

A receipent of seven Emmy nominations, “Abbott” took four honors including the prestigious Program of the Year, Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, and Individual Achievement in Comedy for series creator and star Quinta Brunson. The Program of the Year has been handed out since 1985. Recent winners include “Ted Lasso,” “Watchmen,” “Fleabag” and “The Americans.”
“Succession” took Outstanding Acheivement in Drama while “Dopesick” won the Movie, Miniseries or Special category. In a surprise, “This Is Us’” Mandy Moore beat a historic field to win the Individual Achievement in Drama honor. She won the award for her performance during the show’s final season. “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson” took the Variety, Talk or Sketch Award while “The Babysitter’s Club,” which was not renewed by Netflix, won the Youth Programming trophy. It was the streamers only win this year.
Peter Jackson’s “The Beatles: Get Back” won the News and Information award while their was a tie in Realith Programming with both “The Amazing Race” and “Legendary” sharing the honor. The latter is still waiting on a season four renewal from HBO Max.
Another tie occured for the Career Achievement Award with both Ted Danson and Steve Martin being named to a long list of historic television contributors. “I Love Lucy” won the Heritage Award, an honor bestowed to a classic television program.
In a release, Melanie McFarland, TCA Presiden and TV Critic for Salon, remarked, “Tonight was supposed to be our first time celebrating the TCA Awards in-person since 2019—unfortunately, it was not meant to be. Despite this development, we are proud to announce this year’s roster of talented TCA Award winners. Each of them played a vital role in making the 2021-2022 television season one of the best in recent memory. We sincerely congratulate all of our honorees, and we look forward to gathering in person once again in 2023.”
