‘Clueless’ Sequel Series In The Works At Peacock, Alicia Silverstone Returning

Apr 18, 2025

Alicia Silverstone‘s Cher Horowitz will return, albeit to TV.  Variety reports that a sequel series to 1995’s “Clueless” is in the works over at Peacock.  Note for fans of the original film: this is not the same follow-up series announced in 2020, or the short-lived sitcom based on the movie that ran from 1996-1999, neither of which involved Silverstone.

But the actress will be back for this show, and she’ll also executive produce.  Others involved in the Peacock series include writers Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss, who also have executive producer credits.  Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the 1995 film, and Robert Lawrence, who produced it, return to executive produce as well.  The series will be a CBS Studios production in association with Universal Television.
Just a tidbit about Peacock’s defunct “Clueless” series from 2020: that show focused on Cher’s best friend Dionne, with the central premise being the mystery of Cher’s disappearance.  The new show in development is a direct sequel to Heckerling’s film and features an entirely different creative team; so, no crossover on the two projects whatsoever.
A loose adaptation of Jane Austen‘s novel “Emma,” “Clueless” is one of those classic and quintessential ’90s flicks, and was a star-maker for Silverstone. The actress stars as a naive high schooler from Beverly Hills as she navigates friendships, romance, and losing her virginity, among other teen travails.  Paul Rudd co-stars opposite Silverstone, with Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya in supporting roles.  Rachel Blanchard played Cher in the ABC/UPN follow-up TV series, which ran just three seasons before getting canceled.
Other recent credits for Silverstone include “American Horror Stories,” “The Baby-Sitters Club,” and “American Woman.” Upcoming projects for the actress include Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “Bugonia” and the Acorn TV series “Irish Blood.”  Also of note: the new Peacock series isn’t the first time Silverstone reprised her role of Cher.  She played the character again in a 2023 Super Bowl Ad for Rakuten.
As for Schwartz and Savage, their other credits include co-creating “Gossip Girl” and executive producing Max‘s reboot of their beloved series. They’ve also worked on “Looking For Alaska,” “The OC,” Runaways,” “Nancy Drew,” “Heart Of Divie,” and the “Dynasty” reboot together. So, this tandem has enough experience to make “Clueless” work. Other upcoming projects for the pair include the Apple TV+ drama “City On Fire.” Meanwhile, as a writer, Weiss’s recent credits include “Freakier Friday,” in theaters this August, and the Hulu series “Dollface.”
Expect “Clueless” to debut on Peacock sometime in 2026.
