Deadpool 3 Director Assures Fans the Merc with a Mouth’s Upcoming Film Is ‘Very Much Part of the MCU’

Dec 10, 2023

Summary

Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Deadpool 3, as is Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Director Shawn Levy assures that Deadpool 3 will stay true to the franchise’s DNA, with an audacious, gritty, hilarious, and gnarly tone. Mutant characters have “technically” been a part of the MCU ever since the post credits scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, featuring the “enhanced” versions of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

Wade Wilson will definitely be eating chimichangas in the MCU the next time fans see him on the big screen. Ryan Reynolds confirmed that his character would be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he announced that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine would be joining Deadpool 3. And the film’s director, Shawn Levy, has reiterated the point. Levy said during an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast:

“I’m so wary of giving anything away because I’ve learned the hard way that even with a few titles – like any Marvel title – everything and anything you say can lead to not only rumors but misinformation. I’ll just say this: It’s very much part of the MCU. What a privilege, what a wealth of resources and knowledge.”

Patrick Stewart starred alongside Jackman in their series of X-Men films which began in 2000. But the last time they shared the screen together, both of their iconic characters were killed off in Logan. Nevertheless, Stewart has already made the transition to the MCU courtesy of his cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Coincidentally, that also marked the third big-screen death for Stewart’s character Charles Xavier who also perished in the aforementioned Logan and X-Men: The Last Stand. Just how many times do fans have to watch Professor X die, Marvel?

Welcome to the MCU, Deadpool
Marvel Studios

Deadpool 3 will officially be the first appearance of Wade Wilson and Wolverine in the MCU. But if lovers of the Marvel Comics want to get technical, Mutants have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) — earlier than that when you count the post credits scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Age of Ultron writer and director Joss Whedon altered their backstories to make them “enhanced” beings, but Wanda (Scarlet Witch) and Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver) are both Mutants in the source material. And the two characters first appeared in the pages of X-Men No. 4 (1964).

Hopefully, such a misnomer won’t exist in director Shawn Levy’s film. Deadpool 3 is rumored to have many cameos. But at its core, the third installment in Wade Wilson’s big-screen misadventures will still be true to what the first two films were. Levy said during the same podcast:

“The biggest thrill for Hugh, Ryan, and I is that we’re making very much the movie we hoped to make. One hears rumors all the time – good, bad, everywhere in between – about what certain studios are like to work at. I’ll just say that this Deadpool movie co-starring Wolverine is very much aligned with the DNA of the Deadpool franchise. And there’s been nothing but support in making the movie audacious, gritty, hilarious and gnarly.”

Deadpool 3 remains in limbo, as the production waits for the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike before the movie can move forward. So, a new release date hasn’t been set, at the time of this writing.
