How Young is Too Young to Watch Deadpool & Wolverine? Here’s the Answer According to Ryan Reynolds
Jul 16, 2024
Summary
Be ready for the same crass humor and R-rated content in
Deadpool & Wolverine
as seen in previous films starring Ryan Reynolds.
Director Shawn Levy and Hugh Jackman agree that 3-year-olds should not watch the movie due to its mature content and language.
Despite being Marvel Studios’ first production in the
Deadpool
franchise, the film stays true to the character’s tone with strong violence and language.
The latest Deadpool misadventure, Deadpool & Wolverine, is all set to be releaded in theaters this month. And from early previews and disclosed footage, it seems the film will follow the same storytelling style and tone as the previous films. While the R rating should provide a pretty major clue, if you’re still wondering if children should watch the movie, even if accompanied by an adult, Ryan Reynolds may have just provided the answer.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Shawn Levy, Hugh Jackman, and Reynolds weighed in on the film’s R rating and the its impact on young audiences eager to see Marvel favorites Deadpool and Wolverine share the screen. When asked how young is too young to see the movie, Levy and Jackman agreed that 3-year-old viewers should not watch the film, and while the director did not want to encourage younger viewers to seek out the movie, Reynolds was more than happy to do so, saying:
“I do. So many kids have seen “Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2.” My own kids have seen it. And they came damaged. But it’s never rated R just to be rated R. A lot of it is just the character. The character is very crass. His brain is like a half-eaten omelet inside the skull of a 7-year-old.”
However, this does not mean that Reynolds thinks Deadpool & Wolverine is appropriate for people of all ages, with the actor adding:
“Don’t bring a 114-year-old, because that person will not leave alive. Anyone in a diaper.”
Deadpool & Wolverine is the First R-Rated MCU Movie & There’s Probably a Good Reason
Directed by Shawn Levy and based on the script he co-wrote with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells, Deadpool & Wolverine is the highly anticipated follow-up to Deadpool and Deadpool 2. It is also a film that binds the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the X-Men film series after Marvel Studios got hold of the rights to both the mutants and The Fantastic Four when Disney bought Fox. Yes, the expectations are high for how Deadpool could make fun of this, considering the character is no stranger to meta jokes of this nature.
The sequel picks up with Wade Wilson, now retired, his days as Deadpool left in the past. However, when a new threat arises, he’s recruited by the TVA to save the Sacred Timeline. In his latest outing, he’s joined by Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman once again), the mutant superhero who everyone thought had retired after Logan. Call it a new superhero formula, a buddy-cop edition of an MCU film, or the riskiest project for Marvel Studios, Deadpool & Wolverine promises to be a mindblowing experience for fans.
Related Ryan Reynolds Knows the Reason Why No One but Hugh Jackman Has Played Wolverine Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds does not think anyone but Hugh Jackman can play Wolverine. Do you agree?
While the film is Marvel Studios’ first production in the Deadpool franchise, their participation in the project didn’t stop writers from following the tone of the previous films. Judging from trailers, and early footage screenings, it seems the R rating by the MPAA is well-deserved. All the ratings in the Deadpool franchise have followed the same pattern and for the same reasons (strong violence, language throughout, and sexual content) and it sounds like Deadpool & Wolverine will be no different despite its place in the largely family-friendly MCU.
Deadpool & Wolverine
will be released in theaters on July 26, 2024.
