‘Superman’ Director James Gunn Confirms DCU Justice League Doesn’t Exist “Yet”
Jun 12, 2025
Since it was confirmed that Superman would introduce many other DC heroes apart from the titular character, many fans have wondered if the DCU already has its own version of the Justice League. Unlike the MCU, the DCU is a universe that audiences are entering with metahumans and superpowered individuals having been part of the world for some time, as hinted at in Creature Commandos. This begged the question of whether the Justice League already exists in some form, and instead of being a founding member, Superman would be brought into the team. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming Superman film, James Gunn was asked if he was thinking about a larger shared DC team-up, to which he replied, “Of course, of course. But there is no Justice League in this world…not yet.” Superman will feature a team of superheroes, including Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, but they won’t be the Justice League. Instead, they will be an original creation for the film, The Justice Gang. Gunn says what makes that team different from the Justice League is that the Justice Gang are “good, not saintly.” Meanwhile, Superman star David Corenswet played coy about the potential future of the Justice League in the DCU, saying:
“I mean, that sounds awesome. I don’t take it upon myself to think ahead in that kind of way, just because one would hate to get one’s hopes up about anything in particular and then have it go in another direction. What I like to do is stay blissfully ignorant, and then when James tells me what’s going to happen, I get to have a wonderful surprise. So if Justice League is in the back of his mind, that sounds great to me. I’ll put it at the back of my mind and we’ll see what happens.”
Who Will Be in the DCU’s Justice League?
DC Comics
The few brief glimpses of the Justice Gang in Superman hint that the team is a corporate-backed group with matching outfits, likely from Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) who can be seen in the Peacemaker Season 2 alongside Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner interviewing Christopher Smith / Peacemaker (John Cena) for a potential position on the team. Gunn appears to be making a commentary on the corporate ownership of superheroes, likely implying that what will make the Justice League so different is that they are an independent organization. Even with billionaire Bruce Wayne / Batman on the team, the Justice League won’t be controlled by the whims of Wayne Enterprises.

James Gunn Confirms What DC Fans Want To Hear About Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman 2’
The ‘Superman’ director was sure to reiterate the importance of Matt Reeves’ version of Batman.
With the Justice League coming into the DCU, it leaves fans wondering which heroes will form part of the team. The three core members are Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. A Batman movie titled The Brave and the Bold is in development, and James Gunn recently confirmed work on a new Wonder Woman film, so the DC trinity is accounted for. Meanwhile, Lanterns will introduce two fan-favorite Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. With Isabela Merced cast as Hawkgirl in Superman, there is a chance that Gunn’s Justice League could replicate the lineup of the DC Animated Universe series and bring in both Hawkgirl and John Stewart / Green Lantern. The Justice League typically has seven members, leaving two spots open. While Aquaman or The Flash could fill those spots, the DCU seemingly has no shortage of potential heroes that seem like prime Justice League material, including Supergirl, Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Blue Beetle, and even Peacemaker. There are also plenty of fan-favorite characters that fans have wanted to see in a live-action film, like Zatanna, Vixen, Martian Manhunter, and Captain Atom, who could make powerful additions to the team’s roster. After the DCEU fumbled the Justice League, hopefully, Gunn and DC Studios can deliver a feature film version that the legendary team deserves. Source: Entertainment Weekly
