The Truth Finally Comes Out About Nan and Guy
Jul 5, 2025
Editor’s note: The below recap contains spoilers for The Buccaneers Season 2 Episode 3. “Get Her Out,” the third episode of The Buccaneers’ second season, has a title that allows for many possible meanings. Perhaps it refers to Theo’s (Guy Remmers) decision to kick Nan (Kristine Froseth) out of Tintagel upon finding out about her one passionate night with Guy (Matthew Broome), or perhaps it refers to Nan’s own desire to escape England and run after her true love in Italy. Or maybe the title doesn’t have anything whatsoever to do with Nan. Maybe it’s about the Duke of Tintagel kicking his own mother out of his home, or about him trying to convince Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag) not to marry Hector (Jacob Ifan), or even about a certain dashing older gentleman wooing the Dowager Duchess (Amelia Bullmore) out of her stiff aristocratic life. There’s also the possibility that the “her” in the episode’s title is that elusive entity, the truth, coming out of her well to shame our characters. After all, there’s a lot going on in “Get Her Out,” and the only proper good thing to glean from it is that we are here for some mature romance! Not that the rest of the story is bad from a narrative perspective, mind you. The events in “Get Her Out” will certainly lead to many developments in the weeks to come. However, said developments seem to spell doom for Lizzy, Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse), Nan, and even poor Mabel (Josie Totah), who was just starting to get on her would-be mother-in-law’s good side after being oh-so-forced to share a room with her beloved Honoria (Mia Threapleton). In the middle of all this mess, we’re just happy that the Dowager Duchess, who we’re finally on a first-name basis with, has run into a former flamer from her youth. As a widow with a fully grown son who doesn’t seem to want her around anymore, perhaps she will now be able to live her love story with Reede Robinson (Greg Wise) to the fullest.

Now, Theo has his reasons for being angry with his mother. “Get Her Out” kicks off with the fallout of Lord Seadown’s (Barney Fishwick) Episode 2 revelation about Guy spending the night before Theo and Nan’s wedding at Tintagel Castle. Confronted by her husband, Nan tells him the truth about sleeping with Guy and planning to run away with him, giving up at the last minute to use her powers as duchess to keep her sister safe. Theo is enraged and disappears from the castle, but the Dowager Duchess is grateful that Nan hasn’t told him about the fact that she ran into the star-crossed couple on that fateful night. However, this secret also won’t remain hidden for long. As the situation between Theo and Nan becomes unbearable, with Theo wanting his wife gone and Nan angry that the Dowager Duchess merely wants to use her in order to get Tintagel an heir, Blanche decides to let the entire truth out of the bag. Thus, she confesses that she was the one who basically blackmailed Nan into marrying her son, provoking Theo to kick her out of Tintagel. Blanche’s confession, though, leads Theo to understand that he hasn’t simply been misled by a conspiracy. Instead, he and Nan have been locked inside a cage of his mother’s creation. So, he decides to forgive his wife. Alas, he isn’t able to find her, as Nan has gotten her hands on some letters sent to the Dowager Duchess about Guy and Jinny’s whereabouts and is now on her way to Italy. Whether her journey will have a happy ending or not is anyone’s guess, as Jinny seems to be growing fonder and fonder of Guy, with a scene in which she watches him sleep suggesting that this reluctant friendship might be turning into actual love. Besides, I would put money on Seadown having people following Nan around just to see if she goes to her sister.

‘The Buccaneers’ Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: Why Does Everyone Keep Hiding Letters From Nan?
Seadown brings Theo some news, while Lizzy keeps things from a dear friend.
Nan and Theo’s love life — or whatever you want to call it — isn’t just affected by the memories of Guy. Theo also seems to be catching feelings for Lizzy, who is now engaged to be married to MP Hector Robinson. While he’s mad at Nan, Theo makes a whole speech about Lizzy being extraordinary and needing someone just as great as her by her side. It’s an affection that was born out of the blue, as Theo never had many significant moments with Lizzy apart from a brief sparkle in last week’s episode, but anyway, the writers have decided that it’s there. Lizzy seems to reciprocate these feelings, as she tells Theo that she enjoyed hearing his words, but by this point, he is already laser-focused on finding Nan.
‘The Buccaneers’ Season 2 Episode 3 Resolves Its Plots Too Fast
On the other end of the Buccaneers love spectrum, we have Conchita and Richard being adorable as usual and doing their best to get Cora (Maria Almeida) acquainted with some gentlemen. The young lady, however, is still rebellious, but she quickly changes her mind again about finding love after seeing a sweet moment between her two mentors. And perhaps this is the greatest problem with “Get Her Out”: some things are resolved too fast. Cora doesn’t seem to have lasting opinions, instead changing as fast as the wind. Likewise, Theo’s opinions on Nan shift entirely when he learns about the truth about his mother, even though she still slept with his best friend and agreed to marry him for his title — something that Season 1 Theo was absolutely terrified of. Still, this narrative fickleness is somewhat compensated by the fact that “Get Her Out” gets the plot moving in a way that the two previous episodes were still struggling to do. Even Mabel gets her fair share of troubles, as her mother, having been invited to England for Mr. Robinson’s proposal, is now bent on finding her a husband and “correcting” her ways. The Buccaneers makes it clear to viewers that Lavinia (Viss Elliot Safavi) is well aware that her daughter is happy by Honoria’s side, but still insists on forcing her to marry a man. So much so, in fact, that she enlists Conchita’s services to find Mabel a suitor. Conchita hasn’t said yes yet, but the fact that Lavinia has promised her double her wages if she accepts the job indicates that Mabel will have a lot to deal with in the upcoming episodes.

The episode also outlines important plots for all of the girls.
We are definitely here for a mature romance between the Dowager Duchess and Reede Robinson!
Theo’s affection for Lizzy seems too sudden.
Some of the plot twists suggest a narrative fickleness that is unbecoming for the show.
