Jensen Ackles & Aya Cash To Star In Upcoming ‘The Boys’ Prequel Series

Jul 26, 2024

Is this the biggest bit of TV news to hit Comic-Con this weekend? Deadline reports that “The Boys” will get yet another spinoff on Prime Video: “Vought Rising,” a prequel series that stars Jensen Ackles‘ Soldier Boy and Aya Cash‘s Stormfront and centers on the Vought’s origins in the 1950s.  Good news for fans of “The Boys,” but for the rest of us: does Prime Video really need another one of these? Whatever: this is the last secret spinoff showrunner Eric Kripke was teasing.

In any case, “Vought Rising” is imminent, with “The Boys” executive producer Paul Grellong to serve as showrunner and EP again. But the creative band behind “The Boys” are still involved, too: that means Kripke, in particular. “We are excited to bring you the next deranged series from the world of “The Boys,”” Kripke and Grellong said at their Comic-Con panel before they dived into the prequel’s synopsis.  Read it below.
“It’s a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy, and the diabolical maneuvers of a Supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought,” said the pair. “We cannot wait to blow your minds and trouble your souls with this salacious, grisly saga drenched in blood and Compound V.”
For those who haven’t seen the boys, Ackles’ Soldier Boy and Cash’s Stormfront share similar origins: they’re two of Frederick Vought’s successful test subjects for Compound V, the supe-making compound in the show’s lore. Stormfront was even married to Vought before the moved to the US.
“Vought Rising” is now the fourth spinoff from the original Prime Video series, after “Gen V,” the animated “The Boys Presents; Diabolical,” and the upcoming “The Boys: Mexico,” executive produced by Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal. Other executive producers on the prequel series include Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur, Pavun Shetty, Ken Levin, Jason Letter, Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, and Michaela Starr. “Vought Rising” is a Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios co-production, in association with Kripke Enterprises, Point Grey Pictures, and Original Film.
And “Vought Rising” also continues the long-standing relationship between Ackles and Kripke. Ackles will pull double duty as a star for Prime Video after this announcement: he’s also the lead in the upcoming thriller drama “Countdown,” which got a 13-episode order last month.  Ackle developed that serie before joining the cast of “The Boys,” but he cuoldn’t say no to continuing to work with Kripe.  And expect Ackles’ “Supernatural” co-star Jared Padalecki to show up amid all of this, too, now that he’s done with the shortlived “Walker: Texas Ranger” revival and The CW.
As for Cash, other recent work for the actress includes the FX comedy “You’re The Worst,” Fox‘s “Welcome To Flatch,” and Hulu‘s “The Girl From Plainville.” Stormfront (spoiler alert) died in “The Boys” S3, but it makes sense for Cash to return for a prequel given her respective history with Vought and Soldier Boy. And with “The Boys” S4 now over, it’s clear Kripke & co. have big plans for the show’s fifth and final season and beyond. Who else might come back in S5 or another expansion? Stay tuned on that.
