Diego Luna Teases A “Huge Mountain For” His Character To Climb & Ben Mendelsohn Hints At Tension With Denish Gough’s Daedra Meero

Nov 14, 2024

Earlier this week, Disney+ confirmed “Andor” will return for Season 2 on April 22, 2025.  Then subscribers got their first look (albeit a brief one) at the new season in a Disney+ 2025 sizzle reel a day later.   Not a bad week for “Star Wars” fans, right?

Well, the week isn’t over, and neither are the “Andor” teases.  Now it’s Empire’s turn to get in on the action, with exclusive interviews with series star Diego Luna and one of his worst (indirect) enemies, Ben Mendelsohn‘s Orson Krennik. “Star Wars” fans will remember Krennek from the 2016 film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“: chief architect of the Death Star, smug Imperial officer, and a generally slimy, cape-clad guy it feels good to hate. Luna’s Cassian Andor and Mendelsohn’s Krennik never truly cross paths in “Rogue One,” so it’s a safe prediction they won’t in “Andor” Season 2. But how close might they come? It’s one of S2’s many gripping mysteries.
But Mendelsohn confirmed to Empire that Krennik will cross paths with another “Andor” character:  Denise Gough‘s ambitious Imperial officer Deedra Meero. Imagine the tense dynamic between Dedra’s aspiring upstart and Krennik’s thinly-veiled superiority complex. “If they didn’t see eye to eye, to me, it’s cute,” Mendelsohn said about Krennik’s relationship with Dedra. “Dedra versus Krennic? I think it’s a bit of a mismatch. They’re all underlings to Krennic.” Of course, the two share the Empire’s goal of defeating the Rebellion before it reaches full swing, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll see eye to eye on things. “They’re all going in one direction,” continued Mendelsohn. “The Empire, if you speak your mind, there are differences of opinion.”And Andor will team up with a favorite “Rogue One” character in Season 2 as well: Alan Tudyk‘s feisty, dry-humored reprogrammed Imperial droid K-S20.  In fact, viewers will discover exactly how they two first teamed up. “From an audience perspective, they’ve probably made their own story about how Cassian and K-2 got to work together,” Luna said of the pairing. “It tells you a lot about Cassian that his best friend is a droid. And a droid he had to reprogramme. But how did that actually happen and who was he before? Those questions are going to be answered.” Luna also teased that Season 2 will have an expansive scope all over the galaxy, including a couple of familiar planets. “We move in space more than ever — the amount of planets and sets you’re going to get to see. There are some familiar and new locations,” continued the actor. So where might “Andor” end up?  Creator Tony Gilroy confirmed the inevitable: “I mean, we have to end up on Yavin, right?”
But “Andor” remains a series ultimately about its namesake and his five-year transition from a fledgling rogue to a man firmly entrenched in the galactic Rebellion.  Season 2 covers the last four years of that journey, so expect a lot of growth in Andor, as well as growing pains.  “He’s a man fully committed to the Rebellion,” Luna said of his character. “It’s someone who has to ascend. There’s a huge mountain for him to climb in order to [become] the guy we meet in “Rogue One.””
And Disney+ subscribers can’t wait to watch Cassian inch closer to that proverbial summit.  But there’s worries out there too; like, for example, if CGI Peter Cushing may show up as Moff Tarkin.  Said Mendelsohn: “You know I can’t answer that.  And I delight in not being able to answer your question. It’s a beautiful thing.”
As noted earlier, “Andor” Season 2 premieres on Disney+ on April 22, 2025.
