Far From Water Featured, Reviews Film Threat
Nov 15, 2024
Josh Cox’s most recent film, Far From Water, is the latest addition to his growing collection of well-crafted and indie-minded queer films, capturing a moment in time within the essence of subliminal beauty, but not without unavoidable tension.
The short drama follows two young male friends (Jarid Dominguez and Lucas Nealon) who dip in the ocean and, after experiencing a moment of intimacy in the dunes, pivot their relationship to a coming-of-age moment and perhaps a life path. Within four minutes and possibly less than ten lines of dialogue, Josh Cox captures mood, emotion, and drama. In a beautiful space and time, Far From Water provides a viewer with a lush and exquisite memory.
“…follows two young male friends who dip in the ocean and, after experiencing a moment of intimacy in the dunes, pivot their relationship…”
With close-ups from a flowing and swirling camera, rich imagery, concentrated edits for a consistent tempo, and just enough natural light that changes to dusk, Far From Water captures nature at its peak time of day, moving into the night—a well-created thematic parallel. Within expansive dunes with crashing waves and alluring sea air, we are engaged in real beauty for an intimate moment that will not be forgotten. As fast as Far From Water comes together, it also ends, leaving one feeling that one has spent hours watching and it’s only been minutes.
