My Boo Featured, Reviews Film Threat

Nov 20, 2024

Comedy is so hard to pull off in film…let alone every other medium. It’s just so amazing to see it done right, as in Stephanie Röst’s short film, My Boo.
My Boo opens with a mockumentary-style interview with a young millennial, Jessica (Jessica Faust). The interview focuses on Wallace, her “boo.” Wallace is an Edwardian ghost who met Jessica at a virgin sacrifice—it was love at first sight. For seven minutes, we are a fly-on-the-wall observing Jessica and Wallace in the “wild.”

Simply put, My Boo is a series of gags centered on Jessica and her invisible boyfriend. The jokes are a mix of corny and incredibly clever. They fly by so quickly that even the cornier jokes feel clever. Writer/director Stephanie Röst takes the simple concept of a ghost and his ghoul friend, expands on the premise, mines every bit of humor to be found, and includes only the gags that land or move the story forward. Short and sweet, My Boo is a brilliant comedy short that delivers on every level.
