Melody was born with cerebral palsy, which has impacted both her mobility skills and ability to speak. While Melody’s disability has resulted in her being bound to a wheelchair, her mind is bright, creative, and incredibly resilient, but not everyone else sees that at first glance. When given the opportunity to join a standard sixth-grade class to have a more advanced education, she jumps at the chance to learn and show others what she can do.

Yes, their challenges may be more visible, but this can also mean their strengths are masked by a shallow exterior that does not tell the full story.

The film’s star, Phoebe-Rae Taylor, delivers an incredible performance as an actress in her debut role as Melody. Taylor shares some commonalities with Melody and her performance is genuinely outstanding throughout. She exemplifies the deep frustration and voicelessness of her character.

To further highlight the struggles and successes of Melody, the voice of Jennifer Aniston has been employed to express her inner thoughts. The combination of the physical performance accompanied by the monologue, which provides insight into the character’s state of mind, creates a holistic and deeper exploration of the character and brings this story to life. The result is a clear-cut message about putting judgments aside and recognizing people’s abilities.

Melody’s struggles are surface-deep, but the fragility and suffering that people perceive are more often a reflection than a true observation. For this reason, Out of My Mind is a must-watch film.
