Nov 23, 2024
Out of My Mind is a touching story about a young woman’s struggle to be heard due to people’s frequent dismissal of her abilities and intellect. Throughout the film, Melody Brooks proves her incredible and indomitable will, despite setbacks and challenges. In addition, the movie forces us to consider our own preconceptions, as it highlights that differences do not equal a lack of ability, but rather a disconnection in understanding.
Out of My Mind, directed by Amber Sealey, follows Melody Brooks, a non-verbal sixth grader with cerebral palsy, as she navigates mainstream education. With the support of a young educator, Melody demonstrates her intellectual capabilities despite societal limitations, revealing her powerful inner voice and challenging stereotypes.Director Amber Sealey Release Date January 19, 2024 Writers Sharon M. Melody was born with cerebral palsy, which has impacted both her mobility skills and ability to speak. While Melody’s disability has resulted in her being bound to a wheelchair, her mind is bright, creative, and incredibly resilient, but not everyone else sees that at first glance. When given the opportunity to join a standard sixth-grade class to have a more advanced education, she jumps at the chance to learn and show others what she can do.
Out of My Mind Gives A Voice To The Speechless
Highlighting disabilities in films can often be challenging. It’s important to show respect and acknowledge the challenges of individuals who live with disabilities, but it’s also important to avoid painting them as helpless victims. The reality is far more nuanced, and these individuals have struggles, goals, aspirations, and talents that set them apart and make them unique, just like everybody else. Yes, their challenges may be more visible, but this can also mean their strengths are masked by a shallow exterior that does not tell the full story.
The story in
Out of My Mind
is beautifully woven together with many meaningful moments throughout.
The Disney+ film does a phenomenal job at pulling back the curtain and highlighting the strengths and unique nature of one such young woman, while also acknowledging that the truth is not difficult to see when the individual is given an opportunity to shine. The film’s star, Phoebe-Rae Taylor, delivers an incredible performance as an actress in her debut role as Melody. Taylor shares some commonalities with Melody and her performance is genuinely outstanding throughout. She exemplifies the deep frustration and voicelessness of her character.
To further highlight the struggles and successes of Melody, the voice of Jennifer Aniston has been employed to express her inner thoughts. The combination of the physical performance accompanied by the monologue, which provides insight into the character’s state of mind, creates a holistic and deeper exploration of the character and brings this story to life. The result is a clear-cut message about putting judgments aside and recognizing people’s abilities.
Beautifully Constructed Narrative Which Delivers A Profound Message
The story in Out of My Mind is beautifully woven together with many meaningful moments throughout. On top of Taylor’s outstanding performance, the writing — which adapts the popular novel of the same name by Sharon M. Draper — has an elegance in its design. This starts with Melody’s struggles at watching others move in ways she can’t when she is reduced to a piece of paper with pictures and words. Her agony and struggle are deeply felt.
Related Flow Review: The Year’s Best Animated Movie Feels A Lot Like An Open-World Video Game Flow seems to call upon the language of video games, and not just aesthetically. The effect it creates is a tricky balance struck exactly right.
But as the film progresses, and Melody continues to find new and innovative ways to express herself and communicate, she finds a new grasp on life, which helps her true personality shine through. This ultimately creates a heartwarming and engaging film that constantly challenges expectations and forces us to assess our own bias. Melody’s struggles are surface-deep, but the fragility and suffering that people perceive are more often a reflection than a true observation. For this reason, Out of My Mind is a must-watch film.
Out of My Mind is now available to stream on Disney+.
