Hollywood acting icon Rita Moreno reveals how she scored her Fast X role in a fittingly meta way, thanks to the assistance of a family member.
Hollywood acting icon Rita Moreno reveals how a family member’s involvement helped her secure her role in Fast X in a fittingly meta way for the high-speed franchise. Moreno will star alongside Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Charlize Theron, Jason Momoa, Brie Larson, J Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jason Statham, and John Cena, alongside other returning faces from the franchise’s history. Fast X is the tenth and penultimate film in the core Fast and the Furious franchise and will act as the opening chapter for the eleven-film saga’s two-part finale.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
As reported by ET Online, during the red carpet premiere of her latest feature, 80 For Brady, Moreno’s grandson Justin Fisher revealed how he played a part in her joining the Fast and the Furious franchise. According to the star’s grandson, Fisher pitched the idea of Moreno joining the franchise to Diesel following the premiere of 2021’s West Side Story, when Fisher suggested Moreno take on the role of Dominic Toretto’s grandmother in Fast X after Diesel spoke of his admiration for Moreno. Check out Fisher’s full recollection below:
[Vin and I] caught up and grabbed drinks after the event, and he’s so fond of my grandma. I told him, ‘You should work with her. You should have her be your grandma, have her slap you upside the head. Have her have a little tone, because you know her, it’s all tone.

Fast & Furious’ Cast Remains One Of Its Greatest Strengths
While Fast X is expected to set the stage for a high-octane finale, the film’s incredible cast is ensuring that the series ends things on a high note and expand the all-star cast. Continuing The Fate of the Furious’ Cipher storyline, Theron’s cyberterrorist recruits the help of Momoa’s Dante, while Larson takes on the role of Tess, who is described as an ally to Toretto and his ever-growing family. The Suicide Squad’s Daniela Melchior and Titans’ Alan Ritchson were also cast in the film as currently undisclosed characters.
Though even with new faces joining the franchise, Fast X isn’t shying away from revisiting familiar faces from the franchise’s history. After his long-desired return in Fast 9, Sung Kang’s Han Lue will rejoin Toretto’s family once more alongside Rodriguez, Gibson, and Bridges, while Cena’s Jakob Toretto returns after reconciling with Dom and Jordana Brewster’s Mia Toretto in the prior installment. Meanwhile, Helen Mirren will reprise her role of Queenie, mother to Statham’s Deckard Shaw. Nathalie Emmanuel, Cardi B, and Gal Gadot will also reprise their roles of Ramsey, Lesya, and Gisele from previous installments. As a result, not only does Fast X’s impressive cast continue with the series’ strong casting reputation by expanding the series with recognizable actors in fun roles, but also allows audiences to revisit many of the faces who helped build up the franchise along the way before bringing Toretto’s adventures to a close.
Family has often been highlighted as a core part of the Fast and the Furious franchise, as Toretto’s team grew beyond a simple crew into a group of people who care greatly for one another. As such, Fisher’s story of how Moreno became involved in the franchise is incredibly fitting for the franchise. And as Fast X’s next trailer is soon approaching, many may speculate what the legendary Hollywood star will bring to the series.
