Elle Fanning & Nicole Kidman’s New David E. Kelley Series Lands At Apple

Feb 2, 2024

Is it time to officially anoint Nicole Kidman as the queen of prestige television officially? Because she’s exactly that, and kudos to her and her agents for reading the tea leaves on the shifting industry ages ago. After helping usher in the new era of prestige peak TV with “Big Little Lies,” and following that up with a lot of acclaimed TV work— “Top Of The Lake” for Jane Campion, HBO’s “The Undoing,” “Nine Perfect Strangers” for Hulu, Apple TV+’s “Roar,” “Special Ops: Lioness” for Paramount+, and currently on Prime Video, the series, “Expats” from director Lulu Wang— Kidman has yet another hot TV package in the works that sounds like it’ll be at the top of the most anticipated TV series of 2025.

And yep, it’s another with David E. Kelly, the writer and creator of “Big Little Lies” and “The Undoing,” and arguably still one of the prominent kings of prestige TV production; a man with the Midas Touch.
This latest is called “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” which teams her up with Elle Fanning, who will star and produce the project alongside Kidman and Kelly. The two are not unfamiliar with each other, having already worked together on Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” and John Cameron Mitchell’s “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.” A24 is also one of the producers, and according to Deadline, the project has landed at Apple TV+ with a straight-to-series order (no pilot testing and all that, though it’s likely a limited series).
Here’s the long longline for “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” but the short version is that it’s set in the the world of OnlyFans meets the world of professional wrestling.
Elle Fanning is set to star as Margo Millet, the child of a Hooters waitress and an ex-pro wrestler, who has always known she’d have to make it on her own. So she enrolls at her local junior college, even though she can’t imagine how she’ll ever make a living. She’s still figuring things out and never planned to have an affair with her English professor—and while the affair is brief, it isn’t brief enough to keep her from getting pregnant. Despite everyone’s advice, she decides to keep the baby, primarily out of naiveté and a yearning for something bigger.
Now, at twenty, Margo is alone with an infant, unemployed, and on the verge of eviction. She needs a cash infusion—fast. When her estranged father, Jinx, shows up on her doorstep and asks to move in with her, she agrees in exchange for help with childcare. Then Margo begins to form a plan: she’ll start an OnlyFans as an experiment, and soon finds herself adapting some of Jinx’s advice from the world of wrestling. Like how to craft a compelling character and make your audience fall in love with you. Before she knows it, she’s turned it into a runaway success. Could this be the answer to all of Margo’s problems, or does internet fame come with too high a price?
The series is an adaptation of Rufi Thorpe’s upcoming book of the same name, scheduled for publication in June via HarperCollins imprint William Morrow.
Kelley has at least one more major show coming in 2024 and one with Apple on the upcoming remake of the “Presumed Innocent” series starring Jake Gyllenhaal. He will serve as a showrunner for that one, too.
