Everybody Hates Chris Animated Sequel Series Gets Release Date & First Look Image

Aug 31, 2024

Comedy Central has revealed our first look and premiere date for its new adult animated series Everybody Still Hates Chris. The series is a reimagining of the live-action sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, with the animated outing continuing the semi-autobiographical story of comedian Chris Rock’s childhood. Inspired by his experiences growing up as a skinny nerd in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn to a working-class family, during the late 1980s, Everybody Still Hates Chris will land on Comedy Central on Sept. 25, with the first image from the series coming courtesy of THR. The image features the entire Rock family dining out, a rare occasion for this family as Terry Crew’s character, Julius, was famously thrifty. This is the first glimpse at the long-awaited series, which first began development way back in 2021 and is now all set to air next month on Comedy Central.

How Will It Compare To The Original Series?

The original, live-action Everybody Hates Chris received critical acclaim and is considered one of the best Black sitcoms ever created. Airing from 2005-2009, the series starred Abbott Elementary’s Tyler James Williams as a young Chris Rock, and was praised for its authentic depiction of what coming-of-age and self-discovery feels like in a middle-class African American family. Every episode is a glimpse into the awkward, turbulent adolescence of Chris, while widening the scope to explore his family and community as well. The series doesn’t shy away from topical socio-economic issues and uses humor to explore race and class in America.

The adult animated series will continue with the coming-of-age saga but with a new look and tone. Changing the format from a live-action sitcom to an animated series frees up the writers in terms of visuals and creativity, and it will be interesting to see how the animated series depicts Chris’ narrations, inner thoughts, and daydreams, with the animators surely creating even wilder scenarios than before.

Another change could be the progression of time and the cast aging. Fans of the original series had the satisfaction of watching Chris grow from a boy to a young man and, by the end of the series, the character has transformed, not in spite of his origins and experiences, but because of them. The animated series, however, will further explore and zoom in on the early years of Chris’ life. Showrunner, Sanjay Shah, previously gushed about the project saying:

“I wanted this job to get free tickets to a Chris Rock stand-up show, but we ended up making something we’re proud of that is true to the original series we all loved.”

Rock returns as an executive producer on the series and the narrator for each episode. Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold also reprise their roles as Chris’ parents, Julius and Rochelle, while Tim Joshnson Jr. stars as the voice of young Chris. Everybody Still Hates Chris is produced by Eye Animation Productions of CBS Studios. Titmouse, known for Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Netflix’s Big Mouth, served as the animation studio for the series.

Everybody Still Hates Chris
premieres September 25th, at 10 p.m. ET on Comedy Central
