Ever since the massive gap between the first and second seasons of Invincible, series creator Robert Kirkman and the team have been determined to get the adaptation of his Image Comics smash out on close to a yearly cadence. That’s a tall order, considering the nature of modern streaming series and especially animation, but so far, that plan has gone perfectly. Since Mark Grayson’s battle with Angstrom Levy closed out Season 2 in 2024, the show hasn’t missed a beat, coming back for Season 3 in 2025 and Season 4 earlier this year and earning rave reviews along the way. Season 5 is now on the way for next year, with an order for Season 6 bringing the series one step closer to the seven-to-eight-season estimate Kirkman believes it may take to bring the entirety of the comic to life.

Expectations continue to be sky-high for one of Prime Video’s most consistently popular titles. Season 4 only raised the stakes with the introduction of Grand Regent Thragg, voiced to intimidating perfection by Lee Pace. Things ended on a frightening cliffhanger with a chillingly quiet finale that, after a brutal battle with the Viltrumite that nearly left Mark, Nolan, and Oliver dead, saw Mark reluctantly accept a deal from Thragg to let the Viltrumites live on Earth, find partners, and repopulate their race with human hybrids. Knowing that they have nobody capable of stopping him, there’s little he can do with the planet effectively held hostage. Coupled with the reveal that the late Thaedus left a message for Allen charging him with unleashing an improved Scourge Virus upon the Viltrumites, even if it kills his friends, it sets the stage for a dark future for Earth and its heroes where their choices are only going to get more harrowing. Even as the scope of the series gets wider, the stakes get higher, more characters are introduced, and the expectations rise, there is no slowing down for Invincible. Collider’s Steve Weintraub got the chance to speak to the creator at San Diego Comic-Con about not just Season 5, but the next three seasons of the bloody and brutal superhero hit. First and foremost, he revealed just how long Season 6 has been coming together in the background while Season 5 wrapped up. “It’s funny because we’ve been working on Season 6 for a long time, so prior to the announcement of Season 6 being picked up, it’d be like, ‘We’re still working on Season 5,’ and we are still working on Season 5,” Kirkman revealed. “We’re doing final touches and wrapping up final animation and doing some last-minute ADR to wrap those episodes up.” It’s been a sort of juggling act between the two batches of episodes in completely different phases of production.
“But, yeah, we’re knee-deep in Season 6 and doing animatics and doing voice directing, and the actors are coming in and doing the recordings. It’s weird because there’s always something going on with various seasons of Invincible. We’ll be in a meeting on Season 5 and then doing a record session on Season 6 and polishing scripts later in Season 6 and getting everything ready.”

Robert Kirkman Would Bet Money on All of ‘Invincible’ Being Adapted

With two seasons being cooked up for the next two years, it’s a bit too early for Kirkman to start dishing on Season 7 possibilities, especially when there’s no renewal yet. “If only,” he laughed. “Please keep watching.” However, Invincible’s popularity keeps raising the chances it won’t just get that call, but it’ll get to reach the perfect ending to Mark’s story that reached the page back in 2018. Given the constant uncertainty of the streaming age and the star-studded roster the series is working with, led by Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Gillian Jacobs, Sandra Oh, Walton Goggins, Seth Rogen, and more, that would be nothing short of a miracle.

“It’s looking very likely that we will be able to adapt the entire comic, so that’s very exciting,” Kirkman revealed. He’s so confident that, when Weintraub joked about putting money down on a prediction market in Invincible being fully adapted, he teased, “I might be able to do some insider trading on that.” As exciting as the prospect of turning the entire 144-issue run into a television show is, the focus is on Season 5 right now and, as far as that goes, an exact date hasn’t been set. Getting two seasons out in a single year is still a complete impossibility for the team, given all the staggering that needs to be done to juggle two to three seasons at a time, over the course of three years, but Kirkman reaffirmed that it will arrive in 2027 no matter what, potentially close to the same time as Season 3 and 4.
“No, no, no, no. It’s definitely next year. Getting a season out every year is difficult enough. It still takes three years to make a season of animation, so the only way we’re able to do that is by staggering them and having teams trade off on working different seasons as we go. It’s a lot of work. But yeah, it’ll be out in 2027 at some point, but we haven’t announced the date yet.”
