Netflix Series Unsolved Mysteries Will Debut Volume 5 in Time for Halloween

Aug 28, 2024

It’s that special time of the year when streamers start to announce their eerie October offerings. Fans of the mystifying can rejoice, as Netflix will drop the fifth volume of its Unsolved Mysteries reboot just in time for Halloween, and no doubt much sooner than anyone could have expected. The mystery docuseries’ fourth volume landed on the streamer this July (making it a three-month turnaround between Volumes 4 and 5). For context, the show’s second volume initially aired back in 2022.

An Instagram post shared on the official page of Unsolved Mysteries reads, “There are more mysteries to come. Stay tuned, detectives.” While the image teases, “The Search Continues.” It confirms the forthcoming volume’s October release, but doesn’t provide an exact date, so we’ll just have to wait on that.

Netflix

The popular docuseries reboot was born from a collaboration between Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) and his 21 Lap Entertainment banner, Cosgrove-Meurer Productions (the team that created the original series), and Netflix. In a statement to Netflix Tudum, executive producer Shawn Levy shared:

“‘
Unsolved Mysteries’
continues to resonate with viewers in ways we could never have imagined, with some episodes leading to solving cases that were once thought unsolvable. It is a privilege to collaborate with Terry Dunn Meurer and her team on this iconic franchise, and we are so excited to share this next installment of compelling and fascinating mysteries with viewers around the world.”

How Scary Will Unsolved Mysteries Volume 5 Be?

Unsolved Mysteries Volume 4 featured some of the most unfathomable mysteries we’ve seen in the Netflix series so far, including “Body in the Basement,” which tells the story of Amanda Antoni who was found dead in her home basement, with the walls covered in blood; and “The Severed Head,” which dives into the story of an embalmed severed head, with its eyes missing, found by a teenager in Pennsylvania.

While discussing Volume 5, Terry Dunn Meurer, of Cosgrove-Meurer Productions, teased one of the upcoming episodes as the “most baffling” yet. Given that Meurer has been around since the show’s inception, that’s saying a lot.

“It is the most baffling mystery of all of them I’ve ever done. That’s all I can say right now!”

Unsolved Mysteries debuted in 1987 as a special on NBC. Following six additional specials, it premiered as a series on NBC, hosted by Robert Stack, in 1988. The series featured re-enactments, interviews, and updates to tell stories of real mysteries, ranging from more grounded tales to the supernatural. Unsolved Mysteries, which aired on several networks, ended its original run in 2002, with Stack dying the following year. The mystery docuseries was revived by Spike in 2008, with Dennis Farina hosting until its 2010 conclusion, with Netflix debuting the show’s reboot in 2020.

Along with Unsolved Mysteries, viewers can expect more thrills on the streamer come spooky season, including The Platform 2 on October 4, a sequel to the critically lauded Spanish film set in a futuristic prison where inmates are fed on a descending platform; the Filipino zombie outbreak film Outside on October 11; and the family-friendly werewolf flick Family Pack on October 23.
