Home Casting News Harrison Ford Joins Captain America: New World Order as Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross

Harrison Ford officially joins the MCU in his rumored role as General Ross.

It appears the recent rumors are true. According to a report from Deadline, Harrison Ford is officially joining the MCU, making his debut opposite Anthony Mackie in Captain America: New World Order. Reports began to surface in late September from insider Jeff Sneider during his time on The Hot Mic suggesting Ford was either the studio’s top choice or was already cast as General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross. Last week, Sneider doubled down on his scoop, claiming the actor would appear in the latest Captain America film.

General Ross has been part of the MCU for years, played by late actor William Hurt who tragically passed away in March. Hurt first portrayed the character in The Incredible Hulk in 2008, until his final appearance five movies later with Black Widow in 2021. Ford is set to take over the role, an integral part of the MCU, as the franchise heads toward the feature film, Thunderbolts.
Ross is a top-ranking military official, expected to lead the anti-hero team when Thunderbolts arrives in 2024. Captain America: New World Order should serve as the perfect re-introduction to the character, possibly guiding Mackie as he deals with taking on the Captain America mantle following his time on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Captain America: New World Order will be the first film role for Ford in over two years, with his last appearance in The Call of the Wild in 2020 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker a year before that. The iconic actor is best known for his time in the Star Wars franchise, as well as the titular character in Indiana Jones, and two appearances in the Blade Runner franchise. He will reprise his beloved role as Indian Jones in the upcoming fifth installment, set for release in 2023. Fans are delighted to hear the casting news, despite Hurt’s previous performances, which were well received.

Marvel Studios

Captain America: New World Order will be full of debuts as Anthony Mackie makes his first feature film appearance as the titular character. Mackie is wielding the shield that Chris Evans has carried since his first appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011. The plot has been kept mostly under wraps thus far, but according to the Deadline report, General Ross may play a bigger role with Ford taking over the part.

Julius Onah helms the project, with previous work including Luce and The Cloverfield Paradox. Tim Black Nelson is returning to Marvel’s connected universe as Samuel Sterns/ The Leader, previously joining the franchise in 2008 with The Incredible Hulk. Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, and Shira Haas round out the cast. Dalan Musson and Malcolm Spellman, who both worked on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, will pen the script for Captain America’s fourth outing. Captain America: New World Order still has a ways to go before arriving in theaters, releasing on May 3, 2024.
