Say Goodbye Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Greenland’ Replacement That Somehow Grossed $470 Million

Nov 12, 2025

While Dwayne Johnson’s new MMA biopic continues to dominate VOD charts, it’s time to bid farewell to one of his most underrated projects. Ten years ago, Johnson teamed up with Alexandra Daddario (True Detective) and Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) for San Andreas, a disaster thriller following a rescue helicopter pilot who goes on a dangerous mission with his ex-wife to rescue their daughter. San Andreas has been streaming on Netflix for a few months now, but the streamer has confirmed that the last day to watch the film will be on November 22. Be sure to check it out while you can. San Andreas was panned equally by critics and audiences upon its release 10 years ago. With hundreds of reviews from critics and more than 50,000 from audiences, the film sits at nearly equal Rotten scores of 48% from reviewers and 52% from fans on Rotten Tomatoes. These poor reviews didn’t stop San Andreas from making a fortune at the box office, though. The film miraculously grossed $474 million, somehow turning a profit of its large $110 million budget. Paul Giamatti, who recently earned an Oscar nomination for The Holdovers, also has a role in San Andreas. San Andreas is the perfect watch for those who are fans of Gerard Butler’s 2020 disaster film, Greenland. There’s even a sequel to Greenland coming early next year, but there has been no news regarding a potential second San Andreas movie. Carlton Cuse, Andre Fabrizio, and Jeremy Passmore wrote the script for San Andreas, and Brad Peyton directed the film. Peyton reunited with Johnson a few years later for Rampage, and last year he directed Sterling K. Brown and Jennifer Lopez in the panned sci-fi thriller, Atlas.
Dwayne Johnson May Earn His First Oscar Nomination

Dwayne Johnson may yet earn his first Oscar nomination for his performance in The Smashing Machine, his new A24 MMA biopic from writer/director Benny Safdie. Reviews for The Smashing Machine laud Johnson’s performance as the finest of his career, but after the film woefully underperformed at the box office, his Academy Award hopes may be in jeopardy. Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan has praised Johnson’s performance in the film, which certainly won’t hurt his chances when it comes time to decide on nominations in a few months. Be sure to watch San Andreas before it leaves Netflix on November 22 and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
