She-Hulk Nominated For Outstanding Animated Character Award Despite Fan Criticisms
Mar 18, 2023
The arrival of She-Hulk into the Marvel Cinematic Universe was nothing if not divisive. Whether it was the humor of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, the changes to her origin story, or the design and execution of Jennifer Walters’ green-skinned alter-ego, plenty of people had something to complain about. However, despite the backlash against the visual effects of the series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has landed a nomination for Outstanding Animated Character in an Episode, Commercial or Real-Time Project – yes that is the full award name – at the Visual Effects Society Awards.
The full list of nominations for the award includes Sam from Skull & Bones, Jacob Lee from The Callisto Protocol and Pogo from The Umbrella Academy. While the seven-foot tall superhero is clearly the one that received the most media coverage out of the quartet, whether that will be of aid on the path to award glory is something that we can only wait and see. However, no amount of awards will help with the section of the fan base that didn’t like the appearance of She-Hulk in the slightest.

While there were many long-term fans of She-Hulk’s comic book appearances that praised the show for both sticking to the less than serious tone of Marvel Comics’ original She-Hulk runs, and for developing a live-action version of the character that also fit with her earliest comic appearances, there were many others that were not impressed. Having been used to a big blockbuster budget and epic storytelling, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law came out of the blue as a contradiction of every MCU expectation…which was kind of the point.

Will She-Hulk Return to the MCU?
Marvel StudiosDisney
Well, it is safe to say that there are very few one-shot appearances in the MCU unless you are a villain that meets a sticky end. Even then, nothing is guaranteed. For a character like She-Hulk, it is pretty obvious that whether it is in a second season of her own show, or as part of another Marvel project, Jennifer Walters, played by Tatiana Maslany, will be back.
The real question is where she will actually fit into the MCU’s regular storytelling, considering her comedic persona and the whole breaking of the fourth wall attribute. Naturally, having done it first on screen, if not in Marvel Comics, Deadpool is the go to reference for Marvel characters who speak directly to their audiences. Although it is not likely that She-Hulk will be dropping in on Deadpool 3, there are still many other shows and movies that could see her next appearance.
Charlie Cox recently said that he would love to see She-Hulk turn up in Daredevil: Born Again, and with Jennifer and Matt Murdock having clearly bonded in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, that may not be out of the question. In the end, wherever She-Hulk makes her next appearance, it is clear that there are people who appreciated the work that went into creating the character in a live-action setting, something that is certainly not easy to do. For fans of the series, a win for the character design could well be the best retrospective boost that the show could get.
