Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Return Teased by Marvel Boss: ‘We Have the Story’

May 20, 2023

Spider-Man: No Way Home left Peter Parker free from being a local celebrity again, with Spider-Man’s identity once again a secret after Doctor Strange “erased” him from the memory of the MCU. Where does Tom Holland’s web-slinger go from here? The only person who really knows is Kevin Feige, and he recently teased that the story for Spider-Man 4 is currently being written. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Feige said:

“All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.”

For a short while, it was unclear if Peter Parker would be returning to the MCU, but of course you cannot keep out Marvel’s biggest money-spinning character. While there are plenty of contractual tangles with Sony Pictures, and it is still unclear where their Spider-Man universe is leading, any doubts over Tom Holland’s Spider-Man future in the MCU can firmly be put to rest.

However, with Feige suggesting that work on the script for the next Spider-Man movie has just started, we shouldn’t expect to see Tom Holland back on screen for some time yet. There is a high likelihood that Holland will be back before his next solo outing as part of Phase 6’s Avengers movies, but where Avengers: Secret Wars leaves him could play a big role in exactly where his next adventure picks up his story. As as been made clear by Feige, there are currently many plates spinning, and many more stories coming in time, and Spider-Man is just one part of the ever-growing tapestry.

Will More Than One Spider-Man Appear In the MCU’s Future?

Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in their iterations of Peter Parker, and neither actor has ruled out a potential return in the future. Tobey Maguire in particular has certainly expressed a desire to reprise his role at least one more time. He previously said:

“I love these films and I love all of the different series. If these guys called me and said, “Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?” or “Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?”, it would be a “yes!” Because why wouldn’t I want to do that?”

Of course, outside the live action MCU there are other Spider-Man projects in various stages of completion. Spider-Man: Freshman Year will be an animated series set in the MCU which will act as a prequel to Holland’s MCU appearances and will show what happened before Tony Stark came to enlist him as an Avenger. This year will see the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, with Miles Morales appearing in his second animated feature film. Then there is the newly announced Spider-Man Noir, which will be a live-action series for Amazon Prime that will feature a grizzled, older Spider-Man outside of the MCU and Sony universes.

All in all, there is a lot to come for Spider-Man fans, and Tom Holland’s MCU appearances will only be a small part of it.
