Wakanda Forever Clip Finds Okoye, Aneka & the Dora Milaje Doing Battle

Dec 29, 2022

A new clip from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever brings the action, as Okoye, the Dora Milaje, and new character Aneka do battle with a band of soldiers. Released courtesy of Twitter user Marvel Updates, the sequence is sure to have fans excited for what’s to come when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters next month.

Best known for I May Destroy You, BAFTA Award-winning actress Michaela Coel will join the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Aneka. A Wakandan warrior, this latest footage clearly demonstrates her affinity for fighting, with Coel excited to bring the LGBTQ+ character from the pages of Marvel Comics into live action.

As well as assisting the likes of Okoye and the Dora Milaje in their battles, Aneka will be at the center of a forbidden romance with the second-in-command of Wakanda’s all-female special forces, Ayo, played once again by Florence Kasumba. Ultimately, this element is what sold Coel on joining the MCU. “That sold me on the role, the fact that my character’s queer,” Coel said of her decision to play Aneka. “I thought: I like that, I want to show that to Ghana.”

“People say, ‘Oh, it’s fine, it’s just politics.’ But I don’t think it is just politics when it affects how people get to live their daily lives,” Coel continued, discussing the harsh anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in Ghana. “That’s why it felt important for me to step in and do that role because I know just by my being Ghanaian, Ghanaians will come.”
