‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Shatters HBO’s Viewership Expectations for ‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-Off
Jan 25, 2026
It seems like HBO underestimated the audience’s interest in its latest Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which reportedly welcomed 6.7 million cross-platform viewers over its first three days on the network and streaming service HBO Max. Those numbers eclipsed anything the top bosses ever thought possible (per Warner Bros. Discovery), who may have worried that there’s already enough Westeros action in the world with House of the Dragon. This makes A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms the third-strongest series launch in HBO Max’s history, following post-apocalyptic horror The Last of Us in 2023 and House of the Dragon the year before. Therefore, it should come as no surprise to learn that the fantasy show — an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s 1998 novella The Hedge Knight — has usurped raunchy favorites like Heated Rivalry, Euphoria, Industry, and even The Pitt to become the streamer’s most popular title on the Top 10 chart. In the official MovieWeb review, writer Julian Roman commended its star odd-couple, Ser Dunk and Egg (played charmingly by Peter Claffey and young Dexter Sol Ansell), who form a unique bond when the wannabe knight enters his first jousting tournament.
Dunk and Egg Are Comparable To Beloved ‘Game of Thrones’ Duo

Speaking to GamesRadar+ and other press in promotion of the new show this month, boss Ira Parker drew parallels between Dunk, Egg, Sandor ‘The Hound’ Clegane, and Arya Stark. In the second and third seasons of Thrones, the former Kingsguard, who walked away from his duties in the wake of the Battle of Blackwater, takes Arya hostage out on the wild roads. Even though they’re ill-suited personalities, the pair gradually develop a father-daughter dynamic that becomes one of the highlights of the whole show.
That same bickering energy between a tall bloke and his little companion is found in Dunk and Egg. Parker explained as much while offering the main differences between A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and its epic predecessor. Hurry up Episode 2!
“We don’t have the dead coming to kill mankind. We don’t have the politics, really. We don’t have the massive roving POVs from different families and different characters. We have one character: we have Dunk, and we have Egg, our little stable boy, and I would say that relationship is probably closest to the dynamic of something from Game of Thrones along the lines of the Hound and Arya or Pod and Brienne.
“George [R.R. Martin] does odd couple pairings better than anyone, and those were always my favorite moments from the original series. So now we have an entire series just based on a little odd couple pairing here, and it’s a lot of fun, and hopefully it’s enough for audiences.”
