Brandon Sanderson’s Apple TV Mistborn Movie Gets Best Writing Update Yet As Author Addresses Long Wait

Jul 10, 2026

Brandon Sanderson is making progress on Mistborn for Apple TV. Apple TV’s best movies include projects like Elizabeth Olsen’s afterlife rom-com Eternity, Martin Scorsese’s impactful drama Killers of the Flower Moon, Brad Pitt’s high-speed F1, and more. Now, the streaming service is getting ready to venture into a wondrous fantasy land with one of the genre’s best authors. Among Sanderson’s best books are stories from his fan-favorite fantasy shared universe, the Cosmere, as well as unrelated stories like Alcatraz, Skyward, and then the final three The Wheel Of Time books. Now, Mistborn, one of the biggest franchises within Sanderson’s Cosmere, is being adapted as a movie, and the author shared an update. In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Brandon Sanderson addressed the status of Apple TV’s Mistborn movie script, which the book author is penning.

According to the writer, he is making progress on the Mistborn adaptation, having already made several revisions to the script as it is. Sanderson claims that Mistborn’s screenplay is currently at 91%, so, nearing completion. In an exciting update, Sanderson also revealed the timeline for when he should be done with the script despite all the revisions he is doing. According to him, the author should turn in the Mistborn script at some point in August. Check out the full quote below:
“Little bit of progress on the Mistborn screenplay this week. Not as much, because I’ve been doing a lot of revisions on it. So, I’m going to just move it up 1%—bing to 91%. That doesn’t give you a good indication of how much I’ve been digging into it. Screenplay—you just do a lot of drafts, a lot of revisions. And so, there are parts of this draft that have seen like 12 passes. So you just need to be super tight on a screenplay. I am still planning to turn that in next month sometime.”

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

On January 28, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Apple TV had closed a major deal to create projects based on Sanderson’s Cosmere fantasy franchise. This will include the Mistborn novels being given the movie treatment, while The Stormlight Archive will come to life as a TV show. Different from other fantasy authors like Game of Thrones franchise creator George R. R. Martin, Sanderson will be firmly behind every creative decision made at Apple TV for all upcoming Cosmere adaptations. As part of the deal, Sanderson will be involved with the writing of the projects, as can be seen by him penning the first Mistborn movie. Sanderson is a creator that likes to stay in touch with his audience. To that end, he has been sharing constant updates on the status of the Mistborn script, as well as that of his many books in progress, through videos and more. On the Brandon Sanderson official website’s home page, fans are greeted by trackers for the progress on the fantasy author’s announced projects. Among those is one for the Mistborn screenplay, which is currently dialed to 91%, as per Sanderson’s latest update on the Apple TV movie. There are trackers for Ghostbloods Book 1, Songrise 4.0, and Riftwake Book 3.

The Mistborn series of novels is divided into different eras. The first Mistborn trilogy had a medieval-like fantasy setting with added Renaissance elements, following a group of thieves working against the immortal dictator known as Lord Ruler. The second Mistborn era is completely different, taking place centuries in the future and making full use of a Western/steampunk setting. The series focuses on the duo Wax and Wayne. At the time of writing, there is no release date for Apple TV’s Mistborn movie.
