‘Dutton Ranch’ Lands Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Score

May 16, 2026

Taylor Sheridan is back with yet another Yellowstone series, but it sounds like it may be the perfect follow-up fans of the original series have waited for since it wrapped up back in late 2024. Marshals, a new spin-off series following Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) has been a viewership hit, but reviews have not reached the standard set by the first show. Fortunately, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) have come to the rescue with a strong sequel that boasts an impressive supporting cast. As of this writing, Dutton Ranch has an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 16 reviews. While it appears the critics were only given the first four episodes, the consensus thus far points to a worthy Yellowstone replacement that introduces characters new and old to the neo-western television franchise. MovieWeb’s own 4/5 review concluded that “Dutton Ranch can pull at our emotions in slightly different ways” than viewers saw in the original series. The Duttons are now the underdogs, and the Paramount+ series benefits from flipping that power dynamic upside with the arrival of a new family, the Jacksons. When it comes to the performances, Dutton Ranch is anchored by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser. According to Carissa Pavlica of TV Fanatic, the fan-favorite duo “remain magnetic together, and the quieter moments between them are far more compelling than the series’ larger power struggles.” Meanwhile, The Upcoming’s Andrew Murray concurred that the stellar acting work will please fans, but those “who have already struggled to buy into its cowboy soap opera sensibilities are unlikely to find much here to change their minds.” It will be interesting to see if new audiences are receptive to Dutton Ranch once it premieres on Paramount+ on May 15.

Dutton Ranch follows Beth and Rip after they relocate to Texas, introducing a new set of characters and relationships in the process. However, for some, the change in setting was not enough for the new streaming series to set itself apart. Rodrigo Perez of The Playlist was not particularly amused by the relocation: “Swap Montana for Texas, bring Beth and Rip along for the ride, introduce a few new enemies, and let the old Yellowstone machinery grind away. Ben Travers wrote for IndieWire that the series didn’t need to be “different,” but instead let the new actors, particularly Ed Harris, “sing.”

In addition to Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, Dutton Ranch features a pair of award-winning actors to help set the foundation for the series. Five-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening plays the matriarch of the Jackson family and 10 Petal Ranch, Beulah Jackson. Fellow Oscar-nominated actor Ed Harris also features as Everett McKinney, a veterinarian and mentor to the Duttons. The rest of the cast features Finn Little as Carter, Jai Courtney as Rob-Will, J. R. Villarreal as Azul, Juan Pablo Raba as Joaquin, Marc Menchaca as Zachariah, and Natalie Alyn Lind as Oreana.
