Maul — Shadow Lord’ Breaks Another Rotten Tomatoes Record After 100% Critics Score

Apr 14, 2026

Disney’s latest Star Wars success story isn’t slowing down. After arriving with unusually strong reviews, Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord has now found the kind of audience response that turns early buzz into a real franchise event. The new animated series has broken another Rotten Tomatoes record, this time on the audience side. At the time of writing, Maul: Shadow Lord holds a 94% audience score, making it the best-reviewed Star Wars show of the Disney era by fans, while its earlier 100% critics’ score gave it the highest-rated debut for any Star Wars project by reviewers. That puts the series ahead of Disney-era heavyweights like Andor (89%) and The Mandalorian (78%), and just behind The Empire Strikes Back (97%) and A New Hope (96%) in the wider franchise audience rankings. Maul: Shadow Lord follows Maul, once again voiced by Sam Witwer, in the period after The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith, as he attempts to rebuild his criminal syndicate on the planet Janix. The series, created by Dave Filoni, is rolling out with two episodes a week ahead of a May 4 finale, and has already been renewed for a second season.

That reception makes sense when looking at what critics have responded to so far. The show has been praised for its pulpy style, dynamic animation and set pieces, and willingness to bring genuine mystery back to a character who can sometimes be reduced to iconography rather than fully explored on screen. In a franchise that often carries the weight of nostalgia, Maul: Shadow Lord appears to be benefiting from a more focused identity. It is recognizably Star Wars, but it isn’t relying on familiarity alone. The more interesting part of this story may be what it says about where Star Wars is landing on Disney+. Audience scores across the streaming era have produced a mixed picture, so for Maul: Shadow Lord to beat Andor Season 1, Andor Season 2, and The Mandalorian Season 1 in fan ratings is a meaningful result.

There is still time for those numbers to shift as more reviews are added, as Rotten Tomatoes scores always move as the sample size grows. Even so, Maul: Shadow Lord has already done something rare for modern Star Wars, turning critical approval into audience enthusiasm almost immediately, and with Season 2 already confirmed, Disney now has a spin-off that looks like a long-term win.
