Netflix Scores Big With Modern Remake of 66 Year Old Sci-Fi Thriller Classic
Jul 16, 2026
Netflix has successfully rebooted a 66-year-old science fiction thriller classic, with the intensely terrifying new series scoring a near-perfect 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and earning millions of views that have seen it climb the most-watched streaming chart. Hailing from the legendary studio behind the Godzilla franchise, the new eight-part sci-fi series introduces a very different, even more horrifying kind of movie monster. Taking the 1960 classic and transforming it into an action-packed, deeply dramatic series that combines detective mystery with sci-fi thrills, Netflix resurrects the tragic antihero known as the Human Vapor. And it seems audiences are eager to binge-watch this modern take on the science fiction-infused tragedy.
A Detective on the Hunt for an Elusive Killer Out for Revenge
Written and executive produced by Yeon Sang-ho, the creator behind one of the greatest zombie movies of all time in Train to Busan, Human Vapor is directed by visionary filmmaker Shinzo Katayama (Gannibal, Siblings of the Cape, and Missing). Taking the haunting elements of the Universal classic The Invisible Man and the manga and subsequent anime Death Note, Human Vapor centers on the detective-led hunt for an evasive killer and the action that follows. After a death happens seemingly out of nowhere on live TV, one detective pursues the dark truth, leading him to a secret project that uses and discards the vulnerable… and an especially a seriously elusive killer out for revenge. Based on the 1960 original Human Vapor from director Ishiro Honda and writer Takeshi Kimura, the eight-episode series takes a cult classic, ramps up what was a love story about a bank robber, and molds the original’s heavily political themes into a contemporary tale of clashing agendas involving the police, the mass media, the criminal underworld, livestreamers, and powerful people vying to control the truth. Human Vapor has now amassed 3,400,000 views in its first two weeks, making it one of the most-watched shows on Netflix right now.

‘Human Vapor’ Scores 90% From Critics on Rotten Tomatoes
Despite the daunting task of tackling a classic for the modern era, Human Vapor has excelled itself, scoring a hugely impressive 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. “It’s a fascinating show — bizarre, quirky and undeniably ambitious — but beneath its supernatural premise lies a surprisingly emotional story about grief, injustice, and the people society chooses to forget,” praises the Bangkok Post, with the Japan Times awarding the series a 4/5 rating and commending the special effects on display.
Another 4/5 comes courtesy of the South China Morning Post, who hailed Human Vapor as a “hugely entertaining romp that sublimates the atomic-age paranoia and kitschy monster mayhem of the 1960s original into a thrilling cautionary tale for the modern era, replete with bountiful action, romance, and peril.” Finally, yet another 4/5 from Digital Mafia Talkies calls the Netflix sci-fi show “one of those rare pieces of art which defies every stereotype that’s associated with made-for-TV remakes or reimaginings of popular IP.”
