Netflix’s ‘Detective Hole’ Is Now a Global Streaming Sensation
Apr 7, 2026
Netflix is no stranger to great crime thrillers, and its newest series is no exception. While the streaming service is already home to such modern classics as Mindhunter, Ozark, and The Stranger, its new show can easily be counted among them as one of the very best, despite being released just a couple of weeks ago. In its short time on Netflix, the new crime thriller has already garnered a ton of praise, and rightfully so. It’s based on a series of bestselling novels by Norwegian novelist, Jo Nesbø, so it already has a built-in following. Starring Tobias Santelmann, the show follows a troubled Oslo police detective who must contend with both a horrific serial killer, and his corrupt colleague, Tom Waaler, who is played by Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, RoboCop). Premiering on Netflix on Mar. 26, Detective Hole has become a huge hit on streaming. The nine-episode crime thriller has been bouncing around the Top 10 since its debut, and currently sits in ninth position in the United States (per Flix Patrol). It’s become an even bigger hit internationally, where it hit #1 in more than 10 countries, solidifying Detective Hole as a global sensation.
Netflix’s Version of Harry Hole Is Superior to a Previous Adaptation

Adapting the fifth book in Nesbø’s series of Harry Hole novels, The Devil’s Star, Netflix isn’t the first to try bringing the titular character to life. In 2017, the seventh novel in the saga, The Snowman, was adapted for the big screen by Universal Pictures, with Michael Fassbender playing the popular sleuth. Also starring Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, and J. K. Simmons, the film was a box office flop that earned just a 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Thankfully, Netflix’s version is finding greater success, which is mostly due to the fact that Nesbø himself is involved in the production. The prolific crime author penned all nine episodes of the series, making sure that the show stays true to his vision. The results have been spectacular, to say the least, as Detective Hole has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is obviously head and shoulders above the 2017 film adaptation.
Will There Be a Season 2 of ‘Detective Hole’?
Tobias Santelmann as Harry Hole in Jo Nesbo’s Detective HoleNetflix
Considering there are 13 novels thus far in Nesbø’s series, there’s no shortage of material for Netflix to draw from. From investigating bank robberies to taking down international assassins, there isn’t anything Harry Hole can’t do.
That being said, while Detective Hole has managed to become an international sensation for Netflix, the streaming service has yet to decide if it will renew the show for another season. Given its early success, however, things are looking good for the future of Detective Hole, so we’re hopeful that the show will return at some point in 2027 or 2028. As we await to find out what the future holds for the iconic crime fighter, be sure to check out all nine episodes of the Nordic noir series, Detective Hole, streaming now on Netflix.
