Netflix’s Hit Crime Thriller Dethroned by Near-Perfect Sci-Fi Adventure Smash

Jun 4, 2026

After successfully climbing to first position on Netflix’s Global Top 10 last week, the streaming platform’s hottest crime thriller series has already been dethroned by a new sci-fi adventure. Titled Nemesis, the crime saga has been enjoying success on the daily charts since its debut on May 14, but last week marked the first time the show had reached number one overall after earning 11.4 million views between May 18 and May 24. Starring Matthew Law and Y’lan Noel, Nemesis comes by way of Tani Marole and Courtney A. Kemp, who is also the brains behind the hit Starz series, Power. Often compared to Michael Mann’s Heat, the crime thriller focuses on a master thief and career criminal (Noel), and the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division Lieutenant (Law) obsessed with capturing him. The cat-and-mouse series has received mixed reviews, earning an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and an audience score of just 52%.

Earning 5.9 million views on Netflix between May 25 and May 31, Nemesis fell to second place on the Global Top 10 (per Tudum) as it made room for a new series to take the crown. Premiering on May 21, The Boroughs was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and executive produced by The Duffer Brothers, who are the same creative duo behind Stranger Things. Featuring an all-star cast made up of the likes of Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, and Clarke Peters, The Boroughs centers around a group of unlikely heroes within a retirement community who must stop an alien threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have: time. Rated 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, the near-perfect sci-fi series has been a big hit since its release, and now it has the numbers to back it up. For the week of May 25–31, The Boroughs clocked 9.5 million views, which was enough for it to topple Nemesis and take the number one spot. In total, The Boroughs racked up an impressive 59.4 million hours viewed compared to Nemesis’ 46.3 million hours. That being said, a returning favorite, The Four Seasons Season 2, debuted in third spot with 4.4 million views in its first three days, so it is possible that the hit dramedy could best them both next week when the official numbers are released for June 1–7.
What Does the Future Hold for Both ‘Nemesis’ and ‘The Boroughs’?

While it’s clear that both Nemesis and The Boroughs have been huge hits for Netflix for different reasons, the future of both series remains up in the air right now. Neither has been renewed for a second season, but both Kemp and The Duffer Brothers have said in the past that their respective shows could continue if given the chance.

As we await to find out what’s next for Nemesis and The Boroughs, be sure to catch both shows streaming now on Netflix.
