Netflix’s New 8-Part Western Series Is Now One of the Biggest Shows on Streaming

Jul 15, 2026

Netflix has clearly found its newest smash hit series by way of a retelling of one of the most beloved Westerns of all time, and now it has the numbers to prove it. Premiering last Thursday, July 9, the new series about life on the American frontier immediately shot up to #2 on the charts before taking first place on the daily Top 10 over the weekend. Now, less than a week after its debut, the streaming giant has shared more insight into just how successful it’s really become after just a few days.
Netflix’s Retelling of a Classic Western Is Still a Family-Friendly Show

Starring Luke Bracey and Crosby Fitzgerald as married couple Charles and Caroline Ingalls, Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie is an updated version of the classic 70s and 80s Western that starred Michael Landon and Karren Grassle. Both are based on the popular novels by Laura Ingalls Wilder that began in 1932 with the publication of Little House in the Big Woods, with this new version sticking much closer to the source material. Also starring Alice Halsey and Skywalker Hughes as Laura and Mary Ingalls, Little House on the Prairie begins with the Ingalls family leaving Wisconsin. Hoping to make a fresh start on the American frontier, they settle near Independence, Kansas, and set out to build a new home. What follows is an emotional and heartwarming story that balances the wholesomeness of the original show with the dangers of pioneer life. While it is still a series the family can enjoy together, Netflix’s version is definitely more dramatic in its quest for historical accuracy. Developed by Rebecca Sonnenshine, Little House on the Prairie is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 77%, and though not everyone has appreciated Netflix’s retelling of the classic Western, it’s clear the show has struck a chord with the majority of people. As mentioned, the series became an immediate hit on the streaming giant, which they obviously expected. It was already renewed for a second season four months before the premiere of Season 1, which, based on the ending, will see the Ingalls’ set up camp in the iconic town of Walnut Grove next year.
‘Little House on the Prairie’ Draws Huge Numbers for Netflix

To further highlight just how successful Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie has become, in just its first three days of release, the show drew massive numbers on the streaming service. For the week of July 6–12, the series racked up 6.4 million views for a total of 42.7 million hours watched. That was enough to earn it third place right out of the gate behind Worst Neighbor Ever Season 1, and the smash-hit adaptation of Harlan Coben’s novel, I Will Find You. Check out the full Top 10 for the reporting period below.
