Noah Hawley is a busy talent, writing, directing, and producing multiple projects, including the eagerly anticipated second season of the hit sci-fi series Alien: Earth and the forthcoming Far Cry video game adaptation. Hawley’s Far Cry series for FX was announced last November as an anthology, allowing each season to tell new stories, much like the creator’s lauded Fargo. This also pays homage to the action game franchise, which features new protagonists and locations in each central installment since it launched in 2004. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator and star Rob McElhenney is joining Hawley on the series as a fellow executive producer and writer. However, Mac is also set to star in the show’s debut season, with details about his character being tightly under wraps. Still, Mac has shown his love of the gaming world, as he nearly directed the Minecraft Movie, and he created the gaming industry-centric series Mythic Quest. On top of writing and producing, Hawley will also direct the first two episodes of the Far Cry series, and the creator opened up about his upcoming collaboration with Mac in a recent interview with Deadline. Hawley notes that Far Cry is currently in “hard prep,” with filming slated to begin right after production on Season 2 of Alien: Earth. This will have the creator serving as showrunner for two massive FX projects at once, though Hawley will have co-showrunners to help ease the burden. While he stated, “I am not afraid – yet,” Hawley is aware of the immense challenges ahead, saying, “There will be a moment where I am running two shows at the same time, so you make choices.”

The Far Cry series creator also mentions that production assets for the adaptation are already being built in London at the same locations where Alien: Earth is filming, and that the scripts are well on their way to completion.
“I’ve built them both out of London at Pinewood and there is a secondary location that will serve both shows. I’ve tried to be smart about it. We have most of Alien written and we’re halfway through the other show. Once we have the scripts, it’s less my job and more someone else’s.”
Story details for the Far Cry series remain unknown, as the games do not follow a serialized story or a central character. The Far Cry video games are known for putting players in dangerous locations where they must contend with nature and the violent forces of an eccentric villain. With the series planned as an anthology, it looks set to continue the same formula. Still, there is no word on whether the show will adapt any stories from the games, which have featured ruthless dictators and even a charismatic cult leader. When the project was first announced, Hawley shared a statement, noting his excitement about exploring another anthology with Far Cry, which he looks to honor thematically.
“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme. To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true.”
Hawley and Mac’s Far Cry series still doesn’t have a release date, with fans likely to get a better sense of timing once casting news trickles out and filming begins. Horror fans may also have a movie remake on the horizon, with Hawley’s busy schedule also including bringing Terrified to American audiences. His video game adaptation may still be a few years away, but fans of Hawley’s work have plenty to look forward to, with Alien: Earth Season 2 expected to debut on FX sometime in 2027, with Far Cry hopefully not too far behind.
