Sequel to Keanu Reeves Action Thriller ‘Point Break’ Gets Release Window
May 5, 2026
More than thirty years later, a sequel to one of the best action thrillers of both the 1990s and in the repertoire of John Wick star Keanu Reeves is getting a sequel…and we now know when it will be released. Reeves has been an icon of the action genre for decades, with the seminal John Wick reminding everyone why. But it all started with 1991’s Point Break, which finds Reeves starring as an FBI agent on the hunt for a notorious heist crew, with the franchise now all set to return as a series courtesy of AMC. Directed by Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow and written by W. Peter Iliff, the original Point Break stars Patrick Swayze, Lori Petty, and Gary Busey alongside Reeves, with the title referring to the surfing term “point break,” with Reeves’ young, dumb FBI agent Johnny Utah using the sport to infiltrate a tight-knit gang of Southern California surfers that he believes are leading a double life as the “Ex-Presidents,” a band of bank robbers who don masks of various former heads of state.

Boasting the effortless charm of Reeves, a scene-stealing performance from Swayze, and an assortment of over-the-top, adrenaline-fueled stunts and action sequences, the Point Break follow-up has a lot to live up to as it picks up “35 years after the events of the original film and is focused on a dangerous heist crew with ties to the Ex-Presidents gang.” While we await further updates regarding the plot of the series, and the characters who will lead it (there has been chatter over the years that a Point Break sequel would follow Johnny Utah’s daughter after her father goes missing), AMC, who won the rights to develop the project after a “highly competitive” battle against other streamers and studios, has now revealed that Point Break is eyeing a 2027 release (via THR).
“We’re pushing really fast on Point Break,” said Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios. “We’ve got a great script. We’re hoping to be in production, let’s call it end of this year, top of next year in Australia, which is their summer.”

Point Break has undergone the remake treatment in the past with a now (rightly) forgotten attempt back in 2015. Here’s hoping the sequel series fares far better in recapturing the action thriller magic. The follow-up comes as part of AMC’s push for bigger, character-focused stories for both the network and the streaming platform AMC+. Point Break is one of several major projects in the works, including the scripted family drama NASCAR series Thunder Road starring Dennis Quaid, and an adaptation of the “Bannerman” spy novels, with AMC hoping to introduce more Don Drapers and Walter Whites with its upcoming slate.
