Taylor Sheridan’s New Action Thriller Officially Dethrones ‘Yellowstone’

Jun 11, 2026

For almost a decade now, Yellowstone creator and franchise frontman Taylor Sheridan has dominated the small screen. And the popularity surrounding the actor, writer, director, and producer is showing no signs of letting up, as two of his ongoing shows are now breaking records and riding their way up the charts. Both shows in question are continuations of the flagship Yellowstone series, which came to a somewhat divisive end in December 2024. The first is one of Sheridan’s more action-oriented efforts, Marshals, which finds a returning Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, the youngest son of John Dutton (Kevin Costner). A former US Navy SEAL-turned-rancher-turned-US Marshal, Marshals follows Kayce as he uses his skills as a cowboy and soldier to bring range justice to Montana. The second series, meanwhile, largely acts as a sixth season of Yellowstone, following Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as the indomitable Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler in Dutton Ranch. Clearly, the popularity of the Dutton family didn’t end with John.
‘Marhals’ Is Now the Most-Watched TV Debut

Marshals, the first broadcast series to come out of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone phenomenon, now officially holds the title of the most-watched scripted series debut on CBS since the start of the main series back in 2018. According to Nielsen, the premiere garnered 9.52 million viewers, the most-watched new scripted series debut (without a football lead-in, at least) since the start of Yellowstone. Overall, viewership has reached heights of 20.7 million, with Marshals also taking over CBS’ Reacher-esque series Tracker as the most-watched broadcast show on television. Despite the return of Kayce Dutton and an emphasis on action-packed thrills and police procedural mystery, Marshals is now the lowest-ranked show ever from Taylor Sheridan, holding scores of 45% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside just 27% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. However, while they may be criticizing, audiences are very much still watching, with Marshals continuing the success of the Sheridan-Verse on network TV.
‘Dutton Ranch’ Dominates Streaming

As for streaming, Dutton Ranch has got that covered, with the Yellowstone follow-up setting a new record for Paramount+. Releasing two episodes as part of its premiere back on May 15, Dutton Ranch finds Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton gambling everything on a new life in South Texas. But the ghosts of Yellowstone quickly collide with new realities and a rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire. trac Unlike Marshals, Dutton Ranch has been met with rave reviews (89% and 84% from critics and audiences, respectively), as well as dethroning yet another Taylor Sheridan series, The Madison, as the biggest original series launch in Paramount+ history. Dutton Ranch amassed 12.9 million views globally in its premiere week, shattering The Madison’s 8 million and thus becoming another monumental hit for both the streamer and Sheridan. Currently, the trio of Dutton Ranch, Yellowstone, and Marshals lead the Paramount+ charts globally, with Dutton Ranch ranked #1 in the U.S.

While Paramount+ has yet to officially confirm that Dutton Ranch will return for Season 2, it’s surely inevitable following this success. In the meantime, Marshals has already been renewed for a second outing, with filming having now begun and a first look having been revealed.
