Apple TV’s Best Sci-Fi Series Lands Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Return

One thing we’ve learned over the decades is that you should never bet against Apple. For years, this meant that the company was pushing boundaries with ambitious hardware, with devices like iPods and iPhones fundamentally changing the world. One of their bigger gambles of the last decade was the launch of Apple TV, their own streaming service, which, rather than compiling a library of other studios’ titles, would be home to original programming. Despite the doubters, seven years after Apple TV’s launch, the company once again proves why it’s hard to doubt them. When the service launched, one flagship title was For All Mankind, a series which has quietly become one of the best-reviewed sci-fi series out there. The show was such a success that it earned its own spin-off, Star City, which is wrapping up its debut season after similarly securing impressive reviews. Another sci-fi series, the Rebecca Ferguson-starring Silo, is about to premiere its third season and the reviews are already promising. As of this writing, Rotten Tomatoes has calculated a handful of reviews for Silo Season 3, resulting in a perfect 100% positive score. With Season 1 earning 88% positive reviews and Season 2 scoring 92% positive, it proves the rare upward trajectory for the high-concept sci-fi show.
Based on the Hugh Howey Silo book trilogy, the series unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world hundreds of years into the future, where society has taken refuge in massive underground silos to avoid the toxic environment outside. While Season 1 largely aimed to uncover the mystery behind a murder in the silo, the second season expanded the world to call into question why these silos were built in the first place and who can really be trusted. Season 3 draws heavy inspiration from the events of Howey’s second book in the series, Shift. MovieWeb’s own Christine Persaud gave Season 3 a positive review, while noting there was a bit of a tonal shift, expressing, “More so than the first two seasons, this one is like a mash-up of elements from Severance, Paradise, and Fallout, delivering a fantastic, post-apocalyptic sci-fi tale that isn’t entirely original yet still intriguing.” Over at Collider, Tania Hussain writes, “Three seasons in, Silo somehow still finds new ways to surprise. While some mysteries can collapse under their own weight, especially with an ensemble this big, the show manages the opposite. Using every new revelation to deepen its characters and the world around them, Silo proves once again why it’s not only Apple TV’s best shows, but also one of the best shows currently on television. Thoughtful, gripping, and beautifully made, it sets a new standard for what prestige sci-fi can be.”
The most critical review as of this writing is still a 7 out of 10 from /Film’s Chris Evangelista, who writes, “Silo doesn’t generate as much hype as Severance or the recent Widow’s Bay, and while I’d concede that those are both better shows, neither is quite as addictive as Silo. It’s like a salty snack you just can’t put down, even if you know there are far more nutritious meals to be had.” Silo has already been renewed for Season 4, which is set to be the final season of the series.
