Emmy Nominee Colin Farrell Thought ‘The Penguin’ Could Be Canceled Due to the 2023 Writers’ Strikes

Jul 17, 2025

The Penguin was already one of the best DC projects in decades, even before its record-breaking Emmy nominations haul, but Colin Farrell believed there was a time when the series could be canceled by Warner Bros. due to the writers’ strike. Now, it seems almost unthinkable that there could be a time when The Penguin might not have made it to screens, but that was the precarious situation many Hollywood projects found themselves in less than two years ago. Speaking to Variety after the Emmy nominations were announced, Farrell was asked about any times when he believed the show could be scrapped. He said:
“Yeah, a couple, like the during the strike. And in a world where they can make a Batgirl film and then just can it. I don’t understand it — the debits and credits and ledgers and, f*cking, all that stuff — but they can decide that it’s economically advantageous to just shelve a $90 million film that people have put so much effort into it. You better believe it. When we were in the middle of the strike, I remember saying to my sister, “I don’t know if we’re gonna go back to this. I don’t know if we’re gonna finish it.” I did get nervous.
“But seeing everyone at the end of the strike and going back to pick up where we left off, it was such a f*cking deeply heartfelt reunion. It was unbelievable. It was such a joy to see everyone, and everyone was so relieved and gung-ho and just wanted to finish it. I’m thrilled for the whole crew and the cast. It was such a communal effort.”

Will Colin Farrell Be Back as Oz Cobb?

HBO

It seems unlikely that we will be getting a second season of The Penguin, especially now that the series has been nominated in the “Limited Anthology” category at the Emmys. However, Farrell will likely return to his role as Oz Cobb in a supporting role in The Batman Part II and possibly The Batman Part III. DC Studios Co-Chairman James Gunn was asked earlier in the year about a potential second season of The Penguin, with the writer/director simply saying, “We don’t know. … There are a lot of moving pieces — probably most important Colin himself.” In the production diaries of both The Batman and The Penguin, one aspect constantly brought up was the amount of time it took for Colin to transform into Oz Cobb, as plenty of makeup and prosthetics were required to bring the large and disfigured mobster to life. With The Batman sequel script now seemingly in the hands of Gunn, it looks like Farrell’s return as Penguin is almost guaranteed (as long as his character is in it), even if it doesn’t happen in another season of his own show. The Batman universe is clearly just getting started, so who knows where Farrell’s villain could show up outside Robert Pattinson’s movies? Source: Variety
