‘Euphoria’ Season 3 Holds Firm As HBO’s Most Popular Show on Streaming

May 7, 2026

It’s safe to say that following a few box office bombs, Sydney Sweeney is back and better than ever. Not only did The Housemaid become her highest grossing movie to date after taking in $401 million, but the star can currently be seen in one of the hottest shows on streaming right now that’s managed an impressive run since Season 3 premiered on Apr. 12. Starring Sweeney as Cassie Howard, the series first hit HBO in 2019 and since that time, it’s produced a number of stars in Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer. It returned in 2022 with Season 2, which became HBO’s second-most-watched series behind Game of Thrones until it was overtaken by House of the Dragon. Now in its third and (most likely) final season, Euphoria has managed to defy the haters by becoming a smash on streaming. Since its return on Apr. 12, the HBO hit has held the number one spot in the Top 10 in the United States, save for a couple of days when The Pitt’s Season 2 finale reigned supreme following its airing on Apr. 16. Not even the hot new series, Rooster, has been able to dethrone Euphoria, as it’s remained firmly in second place these past few weeks.
‘Euphoria’ Season 3 Is Getting Dragged Over the Coals

Based on the Israeli series of the same name, Euphoria follows Rue Bennett – a young drug addict who isn’t interested in staying clean – and her self-destructive group of friends who are all struggling to make sense of their futures. Season 3 explores the long-term consequences of their past decisions, and while it might be finding success on HBO in terms of viewing numbers, the new season has been anything but a hit in the eyes of critics. Scoring just a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Catharine Hughes from New Statesman writes that Euphoria Season 3 “feels more like a humiliation ritual than a victory lap,” while Charlotte Ivers from the UK’s Sunday Times adds that “there’s none of the youthful spark that made the first two series so defining for a generation.” Meanwhile, critic Rachel Ho from Exclaim! puts forth a reason why Euphoria Season 3 has failed to connect with viewers:
“The problem with the series’ return four years after its sophomore season is how drastically the world and the show’s original fans have changed, and how little Euphoria has grown in response.”
Speaking of Euphoria’s fanbase, they haven’t been too impressed with Season 3, either. Where critics gave it a 40% rating, the show’s Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes sits at a dismal 43%.
Will Sydney Sweeney’s Winning Ways Continue?

Always one to stay busy, Sweeney has no less than three different projects on the go right now, which could bring her all manner of success. Filming is underway on the long-awaited Gundam movie, which is a military sci-fi action thriller based on the anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam. Also in the pipeline is the tragic comedy, The Custom of the County, which is based on Edith Wharton’s 1913 novel.

Of course, given the massive box office take of The Housemaid, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that Sweeney will return as Millie Calloway in the sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, which is currently in pre-production. Look for that one to hit theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.
