‘Ironheart’ Star Has Defiant Response to Audience Negativity as RT Score Skyrockets
‘Ironheart’ has been gaining some mixed reactions, but that is fine by one star of the MCU series.
Ironheart’s story of Riri Williams has been a mesh of Iron Man’s technological heroism and Doctor Strange-level magic, and as the series comes to a close, it has introduced the flesh-and-blood incarnation of Mephisto. Fans have been since WandaVision, with several characters “definitely being Mephisto,” only they weren’t. Now, though, Mephisto’s journey in the MCU has begun, and it has confirmed one longstanding rumor about who would be playing the role.
Mephisto’s arrival comes via Sacha Baron Cohen, whose casting remained unconfirmed until the demon literally stepped out of the shadows. While the character’s true form has only been hinted at, it is clear that as the MCU heads towards a new saga following Secret Wars, Mephisto’s time is finally coming. The big question is what it actually means for his role in the wider Marvel franchise, and how much influence he has already had on certain characters that have possibly already encountered him.
Fans Have Reacted Positively to Mephisto’s Introduction
Disney+
For comics readers, the character’s history runs deep. Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema in Silver Surfer #3 (1968), Mephisto riffs on the Devil archetype, trafficking in soul bargains and reality rewrites; his Faustian pacts sparked such arcs as Spider-Man’s “One More Day” and the “Infinity Gauntlet” preamble. Translating that to live action required a performer who could pull off both charm and menace, and while Sacha Baron Cohen may be best known for his crazy, comical characters like Borat, he has certainly proven his diversity over the years.
What is next for Mephisto is certainly up for debate. The character has appeared in short stints alongside many of Marvel’s greatest heroes, so there are many places he could appear in the future. Will he get a big story to himself? Questionable, but there are certainly many other characters’ stories that he could make an appearance in. How all of that pans out is something we can only wait to find out in the coming years – just don’t expect Mephisto to suddenly start appearing in every MCU series going forward… you know it doesn’t work like that.
In the meantime, fan reactions to the introduction have been mostly positive, and it has really set up a lot of hope for the character in the future. While Marvel has made some divisive casting choices and character changes over the last several years, it seems like Mephisto’s arrival has been everything many fans wanted, and that is something that should be taken as a win for Kevin Feige and his team.
