Jon Miyahara, Beloved ‘Superstore’ Star, Dead at 83
Aug 10, 2025
Jon Miyahara, best known for portraying Brett in the 2015 NBC sitcom Superstore, has died. His co-star, Colton Dunn, who played Garrett McNeil on the show, first shared news about the actor’s death in a heartwarming social media post. In the comments, other cast members gathered to remember their friend and send condolences to Jon’s family. Although no official statement from the actor’s family has been released at time of writing, his middle daughter, Pennie Cappasola, confirmed to PEOPLE that her father died on Wednesday, August 6, and his wife was by his side. His cause of death hasn’t been revealed, but Cappasola told the publication that Miyahara loved working on the NBC series. He was 83. In Superstore, Jon’s character was known for not doing a lot of speaking. However, there was something about his facial expressions, posture, and more that made viewers’ eyes travel to him on the screen whenever he was in a scene. Dunn’s post on Instagram mentioned that his performances spoke volumes and that Miyahara was a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team. The post, which is a picture of Jon as Brett in the show, where he played the character for 105 episodes, reads:
John Miyahara aka Brett from superstore has sadly passed away. John was a really awesome guy and as a performer could speak volumes with just a look. He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team. It was an honor to know him and work with him. I was lucky enough to meet some of his family and my thoughts are with them. Rest in Peace John.
The Popular ‘Superstore’ Episode Fans Say Will Hit Differently Now
NBC
The comments of the post are filled with actors who’ve worked with Jon and fans saying that he was their favorite part of the show. Kelly Stables wrote, “Oh man! He was always so sweet! Rest in peace.” Irene White, who played Carol in 44 episodes, said, “What an incredible man.” There were only a few episodes of Superstore that Jon didn’t appear in, but to viewers, it was like he was always there. The series followed a group of employees working at a fictional big chain store called Cloud 9. It showcased the diverse aspects of hard-working individuals in retail, a common experience for many worldwide. Starring America Ferrera, Superstore was praised by critics and has a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score. As tributes continue to roll in for the beloved actor, fans on social media are also talking about a season 3 episode that will “hit differently” now that the actor has passed. Titled “Brett Is Dead,” the episode centers around a memorial service the staff held for Brett after a tornado hit the store, and they thought Brett had died. Some workers try to use this to their advantage to get time off. In the end, it was all a misunderstanding as Brett was actually alive and escaped the tornado by driving away in his car.
