May 15, 2025

“Task” follows an FBI agent, played by Mark Ruffalo, who is assigned to lead a specialized task force investigating a rash of violent robberies in the Philadelphia suburbs. As the investigation unfolds, the trail leads to an unlikely suspect—a seemingly average family man, portrayed by Tom Pelphrey, whose quiet life hides a dangerous secret.
While “Task” introduces a new storyline and cast of characters, Ingelsby has hinted that the series is connected to “Mare of Easttown.” Though viewers shouldn’t expect an immediate crossover, the two shows are set in the same narrative universe. According to Ingelsby, these connections will develop gradually over time, laying the groundwork for a larger, more expansive world anchored in the same emotional and geographical terrain.
The series boasts a stellar ensemble including Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton.
“Task” is created, written, and executive produced by Brad Ingelsby, who also serves as showrunner. The series is directed and executive produced by Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Additional executive producers include Mark Roybal and Paul Lee for wiip, Mark Ruffalo, David Crockett, and Ron Schmidt. Nicole Jordan-Webber and Jeremy Yaches of Public Record serve as co-executive producers.
With “Task,” Brad Ingelsby once again returns to the emotionally rich, crime-laden backdrop that made “Mare of Easttown” a cultural phenomenon. And hell, the two series may meet one day down the road, according to Ruffalo.
“Task” premieres this September on HBO and HBO Max. Watch the first teaser trailer below.
