Over the last few years, Josh Hartnett has seen a welcome resurgence in his career that has been remarkable to watch. From appearing in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer to stealing the show as a dad by day, serial killer by night in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap, Hartnett continues to evolve as an actor by appearing in interesting projects. He is looking to continue that evolution with his latest project, which is being set up on Netflix

and will reunite him with someone from his Black Mirror past.
Per Deadline, Hartnett will lead Netflix’s currently untitled limited series that centers on a sea creature who begins to spread terror across a Newfoundland town. Hartnett is set to play a fisherman on the series who not only has to protect his family, but also his community from this mysterious presence from the deep.

Josh Hartnett’s teenage heartthrob years allowed him to smoothly transition into the darker world of horror, in which he’s excelled.

The series comes from Jesse McKeown and also sees Hartnett on board as an executive producer alongside Jessica Rhoades, someone he previously worked with on Black Mirror. McKeown will run things as the series’ showrunner, and he also executive produces alongside Hartnett, Rhoades, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton and Sharon Hall. The show, which will shoot in Newfoundland, Canada, has among its writing ranks Karen Walton, Perry Chafe, and Natty Zavitz, while Jamie Child, Helen Shaver and Stephen Dunn will serve as directors.
Josh Hartnett’s New Netflix Series Boasts a ‘Black Mirror’ Connection

As previously mentioned, Hartnett and Rhoades share a Black Mirror past as they worked together on the Black Mirror episode “Beyond the Sea.” The episode was the third in the sixth series of the anthology show and was written by series creator Charlie Brooker. The episode followed two astronauts in 1969 who inhabited replicas of their bodies on Earth. Hartnett portrayed David, while Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul portrayed Cliff.
Hartnett is no stranger to doing television. His first major role after arriving in Los Angeles early in his career was in the short-lived crime drama series Cracker, which ran for only one season on ABC. Later in his career, after finding success in film, the actor took on the role of Ethan Chandler in the Gothic horror series Penny Dreadful, a show that built a devoted following on Showtime across its three seasons and 27 episodes. In addition to the Black Mirror episode, Hartnett also appeared in the third season of the popular series The Bear as Frank.
The actor was most recently seen in the action outing Fight or Flight, which garnered solid reviews for Hartnett’s committed performance, with the actor also set to star in the upcoming psychological romance film Verity. The film, based on the novel by Colleen Hoover, also stars Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson. That film will hit screens on May 15, 2026, courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios.
