Netflix’s Hit Crime Thriller Overtaken by New 95% Rated Sci-Fi Smash
May 27, 2026
After spending the majority of last week in first position on the Netflix charts, the streamer’s hottest crime thriller series has finally been toppled by a new sci-fi hit. Released on May 21, the new show that’s produced by the same team behind Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, wasted no time scoring a big win for Netflix as it skyrocketed into second place 24 hours after its premiere. Over the weekend, the series moved into first, and will most likely remain there for the foreseeable future. Starring the likes of Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, Denis O’Hare, and Alfre Woodard, Netflix’s new Stranger Things replacement focuses on a group of seniors living in a picturesque retirement community. However, things are clearly not as they seem, and before long, the rag tag bunch realize they must band together if they want to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have: time.

Titled The Boroughs, the eight-episode sci-fi series has been a huge hit with critics and audiences thus far. It holds a Certified Fresh rating of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and its Popcornmeter score sits at a respectable 83%. The best season of Stranger Things (Season 1) received a 97% rating, so it’s clear that, in the eyes of many, The Boroughs is on par with the D&D-themed favorite. The series has been so successful right out of the gate that it’s managed to topple another Netflix newcomer: Nemesis. Co-created by Tani Marole and Courtney A. Kemp, who also created the Power Universe for Starz, Nemesis premiered on May 14. It features Y’lan Noel as Coltrane Wilder, a master thief and career criminal, as well as Matthew Law as Isaiah Stiles, the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division Lieutenant obsessed with capturing him. Like The Boroughs, Nemesis has also been a critical darling, as it holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though its Popcornmeter score is much lower at just 53%.
Will There Be a Season 2 of ‘The Boroughs’?
The cast of The BoroughsNetflix
With The Boroughs already achieving success on Netflix in terms of viewership, Season 2 of the sci-fi hit seems inevitable at this point. Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the duo have already stated that they have mapped out a multi-season arc, which spells good news for those of us that were left hanging after Sam saw that glitch in the mirror. That being said, Netflix has yet to make an official announcement regarding the future of The Boroughs one way or the other. That doesn’t mean there won’t be a Season 2 of the sci-fi favorite, just that the company is waiting for more data to come in before making a decision. Given the track record that The Duffer Brothers have with Netflix, we expect the official word on Season 2 of The Boroughs to come sooner rather than later.
In the meantime, be sure to catch all eight episodes of The Boroughs streaming now on Netflix, where you can also see the eight-episode first season of Nemesis.
